Robert Rooney Jr. Obituary
On Dec. 27, Robert Rooney Jr. passed away at his home in Woodland. Known as "Bob", he was a lifelong resident of Woodland and the oldest son of Robert Rooney Sr. and Jewell (Wolff) Rooney. His grandmother, Audrey Wolff lived for many years at the southwest corner of Pendegast and 4th Streets. Bob was brother to David Rooney (Retha), Sharon Schrader (Bill), and Thomas Rooney (Peggy). He attended Willow Oak School and then Woodland High School, graduating in 1959. He continued studies at UCD obtaining both B.A. and M.A. Degrees in Spanish. In 1965 Bob married his wife of 53 years, Sarah (Sally) Baker, of Carmichael, CA., and in 1966 Bob began his two years of military service at Fort Benning, GA; continuing on to Army Intelligence Training in Baltimore, MD. Bob spent 1967 in the service in Vietnam where he received both a Bronze Star and Air Medal for meritorious service under fire and numerous other commendations for his exemplary military service. Bob and Sally returned to Woodland in 1968 where Bob participated in the family farming operation. He was recognized as an Outstanding Young Farmer, served on the Board of Farmers Rice Co-op and featured in Rice Farming Magazine for his extensive background in custom irrigation of rice, overseeing 12,000 acres of rice and other crops. Under Bob's guidance the family farming operation grew into a one of the largest in the area with Multi-County production in excess of 20,000 acres. Bob was an active member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. The Rooney's have four children, Christian, Amy, Timon (Lynda) and Ana Marisela and granddaughters, Bella and Kylie Rooney. In later years, Bob enjoyed work as a Real Estate Broker.Bob was a story teller and later a poet- writer, participating in area writing groups. He enjoyed sharing his stories with friends and family members. Bob was involved in several area ministries related to (University of the South) Education for Ministry's (EfM) Program. At St. Luke's he shared a mentorship with Sally, and was a Co-Mentor with The Rev. Stephen Leonetti at the California Men's Correctional Facility in Vacaville. Services are planned for Bob at St. Luke's Episcopal Church on Jan. 14, at 11 a.m. A reception will follow. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, Jan. 15, in Dixon, at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Luke's Episcopal Church, to University of the South's Education for Ministry Program (EfM), a Veteran's Organization of choice, or Yolo Hospice.
