William Powers (Duffy) Shackelford passed away unexpectedly in his Woodland home on Wednesday, March 2, 2011. A celebration of his life is scheduled for 12:30 p.m., Saturday, March 12, at the Heidrick Agriculture Center, 1962 Hays Lane, Woodland.

Duffy was born on Nov. 20, 1953, in Salinas. He graduated from Palma High School in 1971. He attended Hartnell College, UC Davis, and received his degree from Sacramento State. Duffy taught sixth grade for 12 years in Esparto and Falls Elementary School in Suisun. He was well known in Winters for being a life guard and a swim team coach for several years.

For the past 18 years, Duffy has had extreme pride and pleasure in growing quality Early Girl tomatoes and selling his produce at farmers markets and high end restaurants in San Francisco and Napa. Duffy was an avid deer hunter and enjoyed fishing, politics, talking on the phone with friends and family, making sugar cookies with Kacy, and watching Sam play rugby for UC Davis.

Duffy leaves behind many good friends and a family that love him. Survivors include his beloved sister, Claire and her family, Sig and Robbie; his father, Bob; his partner in life for 28 years, Donalee; and the pride and joy of his life, son Sam; and daughter, Kacy.

Mr. Shackelford was easily one of the most favorite and memorable teachers in my life. He taught my 6th grade class at Falls Elementary and he was hilarious. He was definitely one of the good guys in this world and he will be missed. God speed.

Duffy was a part of my life in Salinas from 1st grade thru 12th. We ran into eachother occasionally thereafter but the connection was always immediete; warm & welcoming with a big, strong hug. Duffy was everything these wonderful tributes say. A better man you could not ask for. My deepest condolences to all his family. A great loss to us all.

So sorry to read about dear Duffy's death at the prime of his life.
My memories of him are from Falls Elementary in Suisun, where he was such a ball of fire; sarcastic humor made us laugh every day and the students loved him like a big brother/teacher.
It is such a shame that he is gone but I know that he is still laughing from above but also sorry to have left his family/friends so soon!
Peace and love to his family, Eileen Gilson Mols (Vacaville)

Donalee, I wish I had learned of this sad news earlier today so I could have attended Duffy's memorial service. I know the shock and sorrow you are feeling now. Duffy was my teaching partner at Falls School, and was one of the "Good Guys" as we called ourselves for years afterward. We enjoyed the faculty back-to-school barbecues at your house for several years. I love Duffy and will always remember him with a smile. Love to you and the children.

"Mr. Shackelford" was a famous name around the tiny Falls elementary school I attended. I had heard stories of his "coolness" for years. So when 6th grade came around I knew I'd be in for a fun year. Unfortunatly that would be the same year Duffy decided to become a farmer. Over a decade later I find myself selling peaches in a booth next to him at the farmers market. I feel so fortunate that I was given another chance to get to know Duffy. He brightened up every day I was lucky enough to see him. His smile, his carefree personality, his flip flops... I will miss him dearly. The world will be a much more boring place without him.

God's speed Duff. Alot of fond childhood memories growing up in the neighborhood in Salinas, eating Rubarb and dirt clods in your backyard. Building things from your dad's wood pile. Playing ditch until you had to stop and pick an apple from Mrs Grays tree as we were tearing through her back yard. Growing up and inocent times, all made special with your presence. My condolences.

I call Duffy "my phone friend" - he was my husband Arn's best friend and every time he called to talk with Arn, he always spent 5, 10 or sometimes 30 minutes talking and listening to me. I loved his voice and his compassion. He truly touched our lives and he will forever be remembered. My thoughts are with Donalee and kids.

Sam and Kacy... I weep with you. A teacher is not supposed to have favorites, but you two are on my list. Your Dad was so much fun, I love that I got to know him because I had you both in class. Sending hugs.

Duffy was my first boyfriend and we went 'steady' for a few years in high school. I adored him - handsome, funny, smart, athletic, popular, responsible -and it was clear he was going to have a full and fruitful life. Duffy had incredible parents, he loved and respected them so much. And he was so loving and protective of his sister and best friend, Claire. Duffy, thanks for all the great times - prom, Arroyo Seco, rides in your El Camino, help with my homework..... Duffy was a very special young man. He touched all of his many friends in Salinas in an unforgettable way. You will be missed. I will never forget Duffy's wonderful smile, constant laugh, his zest for his family and friends and how he lived his life to its fullest on a daily basis. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

I have so many great memories of the years of doing farmers markets with Duffy, one comes to mind, when Kacy had painted his toenails pink the night before the St. Helena market, he had fallen asleep and did not know and they both got there in the morning and Kacy had told me what she did and Duffy did not notice until about 2 hours after the market had started, you know Duffy, he always wore his sandals, so he had to put on shoes to hide the fact that his toenails were pink! He was a truly unique person and definately one of a kind. The markets will never be the same without him there. My thoughts are with his family. Michele and Frank Bera, Winters,Ca.
