Maurice Hinchey Obituary

The Honorable Maurice D. Hinchey
1938 - 2017
SAUGERITES-Congressman Maurice D. Hinchey, 79, of Saugerties died peacefully Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 22, at his home surrounded by family after a long battle with Frontotemporal Degeneration, a rare neurological condition.
A progressive Democrat who attracted numerous Republican and Independent supporters, he was the first Democrat elected to the NYS Legislature from Ulster County since 1912. Maurice later served in Congress for 20 years serving a seven county district. He won most of his elections with overwhelming majorities, becoming one of the most popular elected officials in the region, in large part because of his outstanding constituent work.
His 38 years of extraordinary public service earned him a reputation as a tireless champion for working people everywhere. A pioneering voice on economic and environment issues, he was a dedicated fighter for economic fairness, women's rights, renewable energy, and preserving essential environments. He was the major sponsor of many of the first laws protecting our water, air, and land, including the nation's first "Acid Rain" law. NYS Governor Mario Cuomo called him the "environmental conscience of New York State."
Serving 18 years in the NYS Assembly-14 years as Chair of the Environmental Conservation Committee-Maurice became known for his investigative work of the infamous Love Canal, the nation's first toxic waste site. He later led a ten-year investigation into illegal dumping of toxic waste by organized crime which brought convictions against more than 20 people. He was responsible for the development of the first statewide system of Urban Cultural Parks and the creation of the Hudson Valley Greenway, and forced GE to cleanup PCBs from the Hudson River.
Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1992, he created the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area, and provided the first funding for the Walkway Over the Hudson, both of which became important economic engines for the region. On the powerful House Appropriations Committee, Maurice advocated for smart economic development, and brought millions of dollars into the district creating substantial job creation. Maurice was a leading opponent of hydraulic fracturing, and was also one of the first and most outspoken opponents of the 2003 war in Iraq.
Born Oct. 27, 1938 in New York City, his family moved to Saugerties when he was nine years old. He graduated St. Mary of the Snow Parochial School and Saugerties High School. Maurice then enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific on the U.S.S. Marshall. He worked for two years as a laborer in a Hudson Valley cement plant, later enrolling for college at SUNY New Paltz. He put himself through school working as a nightshift toll collector on the NYS Thruway. He earned a bachelor's degree and master's degree at SUNY New Paltz and did advanced graduate work in public administration and economics at SUNY Albany.
Maurice retired from Congress on Jan. 3rd, 2013, after successfully overcoming colon cancer in 2012. He is survived by his wife Ilene Marder Hinchey, his children Michelle, Josef and Maurice S. Hinchey, his brothers Michael and John, his sister Patricia Hinchey, and four grandchildren.
Friends will be received Tuesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, John & Lafayette Streets, Saugerties.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday at St. John the Evangelist RC Church at 10 a.m. Burial will be held privately. The family suggests donations to be made to the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (www.theaftd.org), or The Maurice D. Hinchey Catskill Interpretive Center (catskillinterpretivecenter.org). The Honorable Maurice Hinchey worked very hard for the people in New York State as an Assemblyman, and then later on as a Congressman. His strength always improved any circumstances. He was the most honest politician. The only reason he died is because God needed another angel in heaven. He was the best.

I it with much sadness that I just learned of the passing of Maurice. I had the pleasure of working with him many years ago during the early days of the planning of the Interpretative Center that now rightfully bears his name. He became an immediate friend and role model and his leadership was passionate, powerful, and effective. If we had more statesmen like Maurice Hinchey in government, our country would be a better place.

I am so sorry to learn of Maurice's death and send my sympathies to his family. I was fortunate enough to have worked as a legislative aide in Maurice's Kingston office in 1980-82. It was my honor to serve but also a privilege to work for Maurice. He was an honorable and compassionate man. We were truly blessed to have had him in our lives.

My condolences to the Hinchey family. In 1970 Maurice stood in front of Waldbaums Supermarket in Kingston, NY and cordially shook my hand after introducing himself. He was the first politician to ever leave an impression on me. I was 18 years of age. Thank you Maurice for all your years of service. Rest in peace. Lorraine Barten.

He was the only one who listened to the concerns of Vietnam Vets exposed to Agent Orange. Maurice held the first hearings on Agent Orange and was a nationwide leader in recognizing the problems from exposure.

We've lost one of the first locally active citizens to make a real difference in the conditions of this planet, who recognized the importance of careful use of all the earth has to offer. When he first ran for office I was trying for local office. How hard we all worked
to win that election. How proud we all are of all he accomplished.

Maurice and I worked in the State Ed. Department in the teacher certification office in the late 1960's. He used to drive our department head nuts because he always advocated for the applicants. Even then you could see where he was headed! On a personal level, I will always remember his changing a tire for me in our parking lot in the rain. Many years later, my daughter paid him a visit when she was working in DC and hoped to get a job with him. Even though she was not a constituent and he had no openings anyway, he was very kind and took time from his schedule to meet with her. Maurice was one in a million.

Maurice and I served together for many years in the State Assembly. Even though we sat on opposite sides of the aisle and were often miles apart philosophically, we were able to work together successfully on many issues including solid waste management, acid rain and the protection of our state's aquifers. Moe was always a man of his word. His leadership and his friendship will long be remembered.

I've known Maurice for many years. We've dined at our favorite Italian restaurant in Saugerties many times. I didn't know his whole family but do remember a lovely lady, his daughter, from the city. During his years of service, I've voted for him many times.I didn't agree with him many times and told him so, and I believe, he understood why.And told him why I wouldn't vote in his favor a number of times as well.
I pray that the Good Lord takes the best care of his soul and helps his family in their time of sorrow. I also admire what this toll collector did with his life and others should do the same.

What can I say about Congressman Hinchey's passing except that his passing was a sad day. He was a good man, respected by all here in Dutchess County and will be missed. Maurice Hinchey represented us well and we appreciated him for his representation in Washington, DC. Like FDR, Maurice was one of the last great leaders from our area ... Our deepest condolences to his wife and children.

I crossed paths with Maurice about 1980. He always answered all of my letters, and his associates always responded to all of my phone calls, as he was an assemblyman and congressman. He was the most honest, dynamic and sincere legislator that I ever met. His continuous efforts was indeed an asset to the community.
At this moment, I have no doubt that God has another angel in heaven.
