Richard L. Barthel, Jr. SAN DIEGO, CALIF.- Richard L., Barthel, Jr., 55 of San Diego, Calif. died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018, at Sharp Grossmont Hospital. Born July 12, 1963 in Kingston; he is the son of Richard L. Barthel, Sr., and Bernadette M. Brice. Rich graduated from Saugerties High School in 1982 where he was a member of the National Honor Society, the high school band, and the Varsity Tennis Team. He was a 1986 Magna Cum Laude graduate of SUNY Oneonta with a bachelor of arts degree in Political Science. He went on to graduate from California Western School of Law in San Diego in 1990 with a Juris Doctorate Degree. Rich interned with the San Diego Superior Court as legal research intern, the Criminal/Juvenile Trial Court for the Hon. Napoleon A. Jones and the Presiding Department 35 (Law and Motion) Civil Trial Court for the Hon. Michael I. Greer. He was a member of Delta Theta Phi, Advocacy Honors Board, Legal Sophister, received the Am Jur Award and was a contributing author of “Dictionary of Political Trials”. Rich’s hobbies included fishing and playing the drums. He was also a rock and roll historian and a devoted San Diego Chargers fan. The greatest loves of his life were his three children. Surviving in addition to his parents is his wife, Carol Greenwell whom he wed on Oct. 22, 1994; his three children, Marie, Anna and Thomas Barthel; his sister, Kim Serfis and her husband Michael and their children, Dylan Serfis, and Avery VanBuren and her husband Donnie.
