Father Charles A. Gaffigan SchenectadyFather Charles A. Gaffigan, 79, died Sunday, April 19, 2015, at the Gateway House of Peace in Ballston Spa. Fr. Gaffigan was born in Hudson, NY on June 6, 1935 to the late William and Mary Butts Gaffigan. He attended St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, CT and Mater Christi Seminary in Albany where he was in the first graduating class. His philosophical and theological studies were completed at Our Lady of the Angels Seminary in Niagara, NY. After ordination Fr. Gaffigan was assigned for the summer to Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Schenectady. In June of 1963 he was assigned as associate pastor of St. James in Albany with teaching responsibilities at Cardinal McCloskey High School. During the next decade he was appointed associate pastor successively in St. Michael's in South Glens Falls, St. Joseph's in Broadalbin and Annunciation in Ilion. In the early 1980s he also served in St. Mary's in Glens Falls. In September of 1974 he was appointed pastor of Precious Blood parish in South Kortright and was the Dean of Delaware County from 1976-1978. He was appointed pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Philmont and he served as Dean of Columbia County from 1984-1986. In 2009 these two parishes merged as the Parish of Holy Mother and Child. Fr. Gaffigan retired from administrative responsibilities in 2011 and since then has generously offered his priestly service throughout the diocese, most recently at St. Adalbert's in Schenectady. Fr. Gaffigan always had a great love for learning: he went on sabbatical to Notre Dame in 1988 and for years attended the Institute for Priests sponsored by Seton Hall University. He will also be remembered for his door-to-door ministry in Gloversville. Father was also a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Fr. Gaffigan was predeceased by two siblings, Robert E. Gaffigan and Mary Gaffigan Sorel. He is survived by four siblings, Sister Anne Gaffigan, C.S.J. of Latham, John J. Gaffigan of Schenectady, Fr. William J. Gaffigan of Hagaman and Joseph W. Gaffigan of Broomfield, CO; three nieces, Mrs. Louis Walsh, Melissa Sorel and Mrs. Scott Trefethen; and one nephew, William Sorel. My first remembrance of Father Gaffigan was at Camp Tekakwitha on Lake Luzerne in the 1950's. He was one of the seminarians who working as Counselors to us Campers. Once while he was temporarily filling in at St. Francis of Assisi in Northville NY. I recognized him. After Mass while he was greeting parishioners and it was my turn to talk. With him I said " I went to Camp with you " He excitedly answered " Tekakwitha!! " after thaT WE Talked after many Masses. We exchanged contact information. My wife and I were honored to be invited and attend his 50th Anniversary Celebration at Mother and Child Church in Corinth on August 5, 2012.

As my brothers have written, we grew up with the Gaffigans and I would like to add my thoughts about Fr. Charles. Foremost is that he participated in my wedding and gave the blessing at our reception which meant a lot to my husband and me. He always stopped to visit my parents when in the neighborhood and kept in touch with my sister who has special needs, including coming to dinner at her residence. It's obvious he was a real "people person" and although we'll miss him, I'm sure we all feel privileged to have known him. At my mother's funeral he said that she is now in a place where she can do more for us. Now he's there too and will still be watching over us.
My sympathy and prayers.

Fr. Gaffigan taught me religion at Cardinal McCluskey high school on Elm Street in the early 60s. He was a compassionate and mild mannered man, I learned a lot from him. I know he has a front row seat in heaven. God bless you father...

I would like to echo the sentiments my brother Joe wrote earlier to our friends and neighbors, the Gaffigans, in expressing the loss we all feel with the passing of Fr. Charles. I always remember Charlie as being full of energy and with a great smile at all times. I think back in growing up on James St. and during one summer waiting for Charlie to come driving down the street in his Skippy Ice Cream truck to provide us with our ice cream treat for the day. God bless and rest in peace.

To the entire Gaffigan family. From the Landau family your neighbors growing up on James Street. We are so sad for your loss. Speaking for myself, Charlie took me out driving when I first got my learners permit. He was a dear friend for many years and still kept in contact with our sister Ginny.
