Lester W. "Les" Schomas of Wheaton for 35 years Memorial Mass for Lester W. "Les" Schomas, 66, formerly of Ottawa, Ill., will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 1500 Brookdale Road, Naperville. The Rev. Matthew Pozen will officiate. Born Jan. 19, 1936, in Ottawa, he died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at Central DuPage Hospital, Winfield. Interment will be privately held. Les grew up in Ottawa and graduated from Marquette High School, Ottawa. He attended LPO Junior College, LaSalle-Peru, Ill., and graduated from Illinois State University with a degree in education. He received his master's degree from Northeastern University, Chicago. Les served in the Army from 1954 to 1956. He later taught for 42 years, seven of those years at Marquette High School and 35 years in District 200 including Wheaton Central, Wheaton-Warrenville and Wheaton North. Les was named 2002 "Teacher of the Year" in District 200. He retired in spring of 2002. He had served as chairman of the Department of Performing Arts and the theater at Wheaton North High School was recently dedicated "Schomas Theater." Les was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Naperville, and was employed at Old Wayne Golf Course in Wayne, Ill. He enjoyed his children and golfing. He also loved the Green Bay Packers and Notre Dame. Surviving are his wife, Carol A. Schomas (nee Lipinski) of Wheaton, whom he married Aug. 23, 1958; children V. Bradley (Carol) Schomas of Algonquin, Steven Blake (Mona) Schomas of Mountaintop, Pa., Lesliann (Jason) Carlson of Round Lake, Michael Schomas of Glendale Heights, David (Michelle) Schomas of Chicago, Jason Schomas of Hollywood, Calif., Amanda Schomas of Wheaton and Nathan Schomas of Wheaton; grandchildren K.C., Jenna, Natalie and Kennedy Schomas; siblings, Marjorie Schomas of St. Charles and Bernard Schomas of Ottawa; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vincent and Katherine (nee Dwyer) Schomas; son Luke Schomas; and granddaughter Libby Schomas. A memorial visitation will take place from 2 p.m. until the time of services Sunday, at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Home of Their Own, Inc., 100 Coplay Place, Mountaintop, PA 18707; or Meditation Tree Park c/o St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 1500 Brookdale Road, Naperville, IL 60563.
