EDWARD BURKE MCCAFFERY Obituary
ELGIN - Edward Burke McCaffery of Elgin, IL, beloved son of Edward L. and Marie Burke McCaffery, died unexpectedly Sunday, September 24, 2017 from a cardiac incident after windsurfing, a sport he loved throughout his life. Ed is survived by his two loving children, Alex James McCaffery of Elgin, IL and Kathleen Marie "Kat" McCaffery, of St. Paul, MN, his wife Jane McCaffery and his father-in-law Donald Nish, Elgin IL; his sisters Marianne Carnahan, Upton, MA, Eileen McCaffery Cuda, Longmeadow, MA and Jean McCaffery of Longmeadow, MA. He will be deeply missed by his devoted aunts and uncles, Sister Margaret Ellen Burke, Harriman NY, Claire and Arthur Watterson, Nashua NH, Marcia and Richard McCaffery Ithica NY, and his cousins, Terence Watterson, Scott Watterson, Todd Watterson, Karen McCaffery, Richard McCaffery, and Collin McCaffery, their spouses and children who live in cities across the country. Ed was born in Philadelphia, PA on June 30, 1958, and spent his childhood in Mason, New Hampshire, where he excelled in basketball, track and field and was high school athlete of the year. Ed graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a degree in Psychology and moved to Portsmouth, NH where he met and married his wife Jane. In 1992 his son Alex was born. The family moved to New Jersey when Ed accepted a position at Timberland and in 1995 his daughter Kathleen was born. The family later relocated to Jane's childhood home in Elgin, IL, where Ed pursued his career in sales and marketing, including his most recent role as UAV Regional Manager at TopCon. Ed was know to all for his quick wit and his kind heart. He loved skiing, windsurfing, and sharing these times with family and friends. His storytelling skills were unparalleled, and his devotion to his children, Alex and Kat, his greatest legacy. Ed's abundant generosity and sense of humor in the face of adversity was deeply admired and always on display. His family grieves this tragic loss. Ed's gentle and generous spirit will remain in our hearts forever. A memorial service will be held at the Burnidge Forest Preserve, off Coombs Road, Elgin IL on Thursday, Sept 28, 2017 at 11:00am. A second service will take place in Mason, NH in October 28. In lieu of flowers, to honor Ed's commitment to charitable giving and his love of the ocean, the family welcomes donations to the Cousteau Society.
