1932 - 2018 Obituary Condolences
James M. Heffern, age 86, passed away peacefully Monday, December 3rd, surrounded by his family, at Alexian Brothers Hospice after a short battle with cancer. He was born on May 23rd, 1932 to the late William and Evelyn Heffern in Chicago and was preceded in death by siblings William, Beatrice, Kenneth and Evelyn (Pinky). Mr. Heffern is survived by the love of his life and wife of 63 years, Marie, three children, Jim Heffern (Irene), Bill Heffern (Anne) and Laura Priehs (Peter). He also leaves behind one grandchild, Will Heffern. James is a veteran of the Korean War where he served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps from 1952 to 1954. He is the former President and Founder of Genetron - a company that provided Information Systems to hospitals. Having purchased one of the very first homes in Elk Grove almost 60 years ago, he was a lifelong supporter of the Elk Grove Park District and the Village of Elk Grove. His decades of service volunteering started in 1964 with boys baseball, after which he co-founded Elk Grove Youth Football in 1967 and created the over 50 men's softball league in 1997. Mr. Heffern was also a past Elk Grove Park Board Commissioner, served as play-by-play announcer for EGTV high school football and hosted an Elk Grove cable television show for over 20-years. Mr. Heffern was also the author of two books, "Just One More Season" and "Junior High at Age 75." In August 2010, the Village re-named the Elk Grove TV studio after him and in November 2015, J.M. Heffern Park was dedicated in his honor. There is a private burial planned at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.
