John Joseph "Jack" Mahoney Sr. Obituary
John Joseph "Jack" Mahoney Sr., formerly of Oak Brook and Naperville, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Monday October 28, 2013. Born March 5, 1923 in Chicago to Thomas and Katherine Mahoney. He was a teacher by profession, a Silver Star and Purple Heart recipient in WWII, and successfully raised seven children with his wife, Nora Eileen. He was the beloved father of John Jr. "Jay" (Sandy), Mark, Terry (Cathy), Michael, Christopher (Ruth Ann), and Katherine "Kim" (Jerry) Barrio. Dearest Grandfather to Amanda Erin, Matthew, Douglas, Colleen, Austin, Sean, Connor, Rachel, Brenden and Meaghan. Brother-in-law to John (Bobbie) O'Brien, Adeline O'Brien, and Millie Chirempes. He was an uncle to many nieces and nephews. Jack was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Nora Eileen, nee O'Brien; his son, Brian; granddaughters, Heather and Mary Kate; his brother, Jerome; brothers-in-laws, Thomas O'Brien, Danny O'Brien; sisters-in-laws, Mary O'Brien (the late Richard) Nicholson, Anne C. Foley, and Margaret O'Brien (the late Gene) Barry. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to Disabled American Veterans, www.DAV.org, or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, www.jdrf.org. Visitation will be Friday, November 1, 2013 from 3 to 9 pm at the Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home, 185 E. Northwest Highway, Palatine, IL. Funeral Mass will be Saturday, November 2, 2013 at 11 am at Holy Family Catholic Church, 2515 W. Palatine Road, Inverness with him lying in state from 10 am until the time of the Mass.
