ROBERT DUNTON "BOB" RUST Obituary
Robert (Bob) Dunton Rust 96, of Elgin and recently of East Dundee, passed away peacefully on Dec. 6, 2018 at Advocate Sherman Hospital. Bob was born on Nov. 13, 1922 in Madison, Wisconsin and attended grade schools in Barrington, Elgin, South Elgin, Sioux City, Iowa and West Dundee, graduating from Barrington High School in 1940. He attended University of llinois, where he was a member of Lamba Chi Alpha and Alpha Phi Omega, Fraternities, before being inducted into the Navy in 1943. He graduated US Naval Signal School at University of Illinois and Amphibious Training School at Camp Pendelton, California. He served on the USS Libra, AKA 12, during WWII in the Pacific Theatre and was involved in combat operations in Iwo Jima and was in Tokyo Bay at the time of the signing of the armistice. He was awarded four battle stars for his service and was honorably discharged as Signalman 3rd Class on February 14, 1946. After his discharge, he earned his private pilot's license at Elgin Airport through the Gl bill. In 1947 he married Marge Johnson, settled in Elgin and started his family. Bob earned the rank of Eagle Scout from Troop 21 in Barrington and continued his contribution to scouting by serving 10 years as scoutmaster of Troop 18, sponsored by Columbia School PTA in Elgin, and later as Assistant District Commissioner. Bob was employed by Asplundh Tree Company for 30 years and then worked at School District U-46, in the Plant Operations Division for 13 years until his retirement in 1988. His favorite pastimes in retirement were: traveling, fishing, bowling, bingo and playing pinochle. He was a charter member of the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame in Hayward, Wisconsin, a long-time member of Walleyes Unlimited, a life member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 799, a member of the American Legion Post 57, past president of the Elgin Golden K Kiwanis, and a member of Faith United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Euba (Dunton) Rust, a sister, Carolyn (Rust) Patterson, a granddaughter, Amy Brown in infancy, his wife Marge (Johnson) Rust, a son, Richard (Diane) Rust and a daughter, Patricia (Rust) Brown. Survivors include a sister, Phyllis (Rust) Perry of Herkimer, NY, daughter Barbara (Tim) of Otsego, Mn, son James (Lou Ann) Rust of Sycamore, son John of Woodstock, 9 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great grandchildren. Visitation will be 9:00-11:00 am at Laird Funeral Home, Elgin, on Monday December 10, 2018, followed by the service at 11:00am.
