SEBASTIANO "SEBASTIAN" MAGLIO Obituary
EAST DUNDEE - Sebastiano "Sebastian" Maglio, age 85, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family on Friday, January 11, 2019. He was born on May 6, 1933 in Santo Stefano di Camastra, Sicily and was the son of the late Gaetano and Grazia Maglio. While growing up in Italy, this 7th generation Master Potter spent his youth as an apprentice and developed his talent to become the passionate craftsman and artist that he was. Sebastian immigrated to the United States in 1963, and shortly thereafter, he presented his techniques for an exhibition in Chicago. He had a strong following through both his craftsmanship and showmanship and continued to mentor young potters until his retirement from Haeger Pottery in 1995 after 32 years of loyal and valued service. Over his distinguished career as a Master Potter, Sebastian received many awards and achievements including being named in the 1976 Guinness Book of World Records for the World's largest hand thrown vase. He was a resident of the Dundee area for over 55 years and a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church in West Dundee. In retirement he enjoyed spending time with his family and became an avid award-winning gardener. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years; Concetta (Connie) (nee Lipari) whom he married on April 29, 1961. Their sons; Thomas (Jeannie) and Angelo Maglio. His grandchildren; Michael Sebastian, Alexandra Lacey and Brianna Nicole Maglio. Other survivors include his brother; Antonino (Domenica) Maglio, his sister-in-law; Maria Boscia Maglio along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends in the United States, Italy, and Argentina. In addition to his parents, Sebastian was preceded in death by his brothers; Santo and Giuseppe Maglio and sisters; Rosalia Galati and Sebastiana Maglio in infancy and his grandsons in infancy; Angelo Jonathan and Matthew Christopher Maglio. Family and friends will gather for a Funeral Mass on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Catherine of Siena Church, West Dundee. Entombment will follow at All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 18, 2019 at Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee from 4-8 P.M. and again at the church on Saturday morning from 9:30 A.M. until the time of the Mass.
