PALATINE - Frederick R. Barr, 88, passed away peacefully at home and with family on July 30, 2015. He was predeceased by his wife Edie and was married for nearly 60 years. He is survived by sons Fred Jr. (Karen), Christopher and Steven (Laurie). The Grandfather of David Barr, Katie Glover (Dustin), Eric Barr and Lauren Barr. Great-Grandfather of Blakely Glover. He was born December 7, 1926 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He proudly served as a US Marine, and graduated from Franklin and Marshall College in 1951. He worked in a sales management role with International Harvester Corporation for over 30 years, and later worked for School District 211 as an Integration Specialist, consulting local teachers to focus on how best to prepare their students to enter the workforce and perform at a high level while doing so. Perhaps his greatest achievements came after he retired, where he took a lead role with Journeys/PADS Homeless Shelters for many years. In 2006, He was elected to the Journeys Hall of Fame for his dedication to the organization and people affected by homelessness. A regular participant in Habitat for Humanity projects. He was very active in the Fremd High School Booster Club from 1978 to 1986 and served as President of the organization from 1979 to 1982. He was a member of The Palatine Lions Club, was Lion of the Year in 2003, and was selected as a Melvin Jones Fellow in 2006. He was selected as the Pioneer Press 1999 Palatine Volunteer of the Year for outstanding service to his community. Visitation will be held September 12 from 9:30 -11:00 am at The Presbyterian Church of Palatine, 800 E. Palatine Road (at Rohlwing Rd.), Palatine, IL 60074. A Memorial Service to follow at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Fred's memory to JourneyCare Hospice, 405 Lake Zurich Rd., Barrington, IL 60010 or The Presbyterian Church of Palatine.
