GERALDINE "GERRY" NELSON Obituary
Geraldine "Gerry" Nelson, loving and beloved wife of F Byron Nelson, passed away in the early hours of Thursday, June 16, 2016, at Delnor Community Hospital from natural causes. Gerry was born in 1921, in Aurora, Illinois, to Joseph and Marie Vonck, and later with siblings Don and Junella. She graduated from Aurora West High School in 1939, as Salutatorian, as the President of the Girls Athletic Association, and as a member of the National Honor Society. Being a leader and polymath continued into her adult life. A beauty with brains, Gerry was a model who also worked on one of the first IBM machines used at All Steel. She was a savvy bridge player and was President of the Geneva Garden Club. She volunteered extensively, most of all in the burn unit of Cottage Hospital in Galesburg, Illinois, where she learned a phrase she would repeat many times: "I felt bad that I had no shoes, until I met a man with no feet," an expression of the gratitude she lived every day. Despite her many achievements, Gerry's crowning legacy remains her family, of which she was the queen. Gerry married F Byron Nelson in 1941. They got started on a family right away, which was a good thing. Soon to follow were Donald, Byron Jr, Charles, Walter, Thomas, Jonathon, Christine, and Emily. The next generation was no less prolific: Tracy, Tricia, Courtney, Kimberly, Joseph, Charles, Daniel II, Conor, Kerstin, Thomas III, Killian, and Hailey. Great-grandchildren count 9, for now. Visitation will be on Saturday, June 18, 2016, at Holy Cross Church in Batavia, IL, from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM. Requiem Service will follow from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM.
