Turn the dial up on your car FM Radio for one of the impassioned Motorola men behind its creation, Ray Schulenberg. Raymond Schulenberg, a dynamo never to be forgotten, died on July 17, 2017. To know him - you knew kindness, restraint, intellect and a curiosity to learn something new everyday. At 93, he was learning and actively experiencing life until the very end. Ray was born on a farm on April 4, 1924 in Buffalo, NY to Sylvester and Antoinette Schulenberg and was the oldest of five. Ray left Buffalo to proudly serve his country in WWII. The military found he had an exceptionally high IQ so he stayed stateside to work in technology helping to expand the use of radar using radio communication tech. After the war, he was quickly recruited to Motorola where he had an astounding 40-year career as an engineer. When he retired he didn't stop working - from 1990, until his dying day he worked as a board member for the Motorola Credit Union now called Andigo, volunteered every day of the week to various organizations helping others half his age and inspiring folks to live a long life. An inspiration, as he survived and lived with multiple cancers for years; he was a living superman for all to know. And most of Palatine and Arlington Heights did know him, he was an active and devoted community member. He received many awards throughout the years for his service and time, and in true Ray form, said it was simply because he outlived all the other volunteers. That is Ray, he never understood how special he was because being a great person came naturally and was an obvious thing to do, so he did it. That was his virtue of virtues. He loved - America, politics, dining at the Palm Court, travel, the credit union, his churches, Manhattans with extra cherries, being relevant, giving back to his community, and most of all his smart and beautiful wife of 52 years, Barbara. Barbara died in 2015 and before her death as she battled Alzheimer's for years, he held her tightly never missing a day with her. She completed him; and now they are reunited. Hopefully, they will both feel the positive FM Radio waves we are playing in his honor. Ray is survived and cherished by his loving friends and the entire and extended Schulenberg family. Paw Paw, you will be missed. On Saturday August 12, 2017, the Memorial Mass will be held at St. Theresa Catholic Church at 455 N. Benton St. in Palatine, IL at 10:00AM. All are welcome to celebrate his beautiful life.
