William T. Clinton

William T. Clinton, 86, passed away on Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at his new residence in Tel Hai Retirement Community in Honey Brook. He was born to Harry N. and Caroline Trott Clinton in Coatesville Hospital. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Virginia (Ginger) Byerly Clinton; his children, William N. Clinton, (Cheryl), Keith T. Clinton, and Sally A. Clinton (Gene A. Mirolli); grandchildren, Zachary, Jaron, Lindsay, Jason, Shane, Sam; his sister, Ann Clinton McCarter; niece, Susan McCarter King; nephew, John E McCarter, Jr. (Tish); great nieces, Karlie, Mia, Stevie; and great nephew Jackson; along with many wonderful friends. Bill excelled as a swimmer and was PA state champion in backstroke for three years while a student at Scott Senior High School in Coatesville. From then on, swimming was a significant part of his life. After graduating from high school in 1949 he went to Mercersburg Academy, then to college at Yale University. He was a member of the Yale Swim Team and pursued his passion for singing in the chorus. After his sophomore year he joined the U.S. Army where, due to his aptitude for language, he was recruited to the Army Language School in Monterey, CA to study Russian then served in Army Intelligence for three years in Arlington, VA. Bill married his high school sweetheart, Ginger Byerly, on February 28, 1953. After his 1956 discharge from the Army, Bill returned to Yale, was voted team captain of the Yale Swim Team in 1956-57, named to the All American Collegiate Swimming Team and graduated from Yale in 1957. Bill then began his career in the stainless steel industry in the Sales Department with G. O. Carlson. His job took him to NJ and MA, and eventually back to PA, where he and Ginger raised their family at their home in West Chester. Bill ventured into other businesses, but returned to the steel industry as a sales manager with Lukens Steel Company where he worked until he retired. Bill pursued many interests including his hobby, The Cartophile, through which he collected and sold antique maps and rare books, had a passion for the Civil War, and a love for great food. He enjoyed watching and feeding the birds, had a love for nature and our National Parks, family camping and traveling, and enjoyed many adventures with friends. He was an avid sports fan, lifetime Eagles fan and dedicated to attending the sporting events of his children and grandchildren. He contributed to the community as a volunteer with Good Works, his church, and other organizations. Throughout his life Bill loved music and singing, partaking in barbershop quartets, choruses with his deep bass voice wherever he lived, most notably the First Presbyterian Choir in West Chester, which he joined in 1967 and sang in for over 40 years. Bill was well-loved, respected and appreciated by many, and will be missed. Bill’s life will be celebrated on Saturday, June 23, 2018, at First Presbyterian Church, 130 W.
