Dr. Robert J. (Bob) Champaine Obituary
Dr. Robert J. Champaine (Bob) passed away on January 8th, 2018 after a brief illness. Born in Philadelphia, PA on April 8, 1933, the birth announcement read “Prohibition Out, Champaine In!”, as he and his twin sister Lila were welcomed into the world by adoring and anxious parents. He grew up in south Philadelphia and was active in the Boy Scouts, carrying his love of the great outdoors throughout his life. Though he grew up in the city, he loved to take fishing trips with his father, collect butterfly specimens, and bird watch every chance he had. He eventually settled into life on a West Chester, PA horse farm, as his dental practice gave way to his passion for horses. He and his wife Joyce raised four children amidst rolling pastures and built a successful business providing hundreds of horses and ponies to summer camps along the east coast. He spent many weeks during those years traveling back and forth to the Midwest, on his never-ending quest for more horses. As life evolved, he found an interest in real estate and developed and sold properties in Chester County. It was during this time that he met his loving partner Barbara Jaffe, of which they shared 30 years together, enjoying working in real estate in Brigantine, NJ; where they have lived the last 21 years. He liked traveling on cruises, the salt air and sea life, and could often be seen tending to his various crab traps on the island. He was generous to friends and neighbors, always lending a helping hand… and greatly enjoyed entertaining and playing poker. He loved their newest rescue cats, Rascal and Bandit, spending much time getting them used to their new home. He is survived by his loving family, including: twin sister, Lila Freeman of Voorhees, NJ, daughter Michele Firth of West Chester, PA and her husband, Ed, daughter Valerie Champaine of Olympia, WA, daughter Virginia Coverdale of Olympia, WA, and son David Champaine of Yelm, WA. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Keates-Plum Funeral Home, 3112 Brigantine Avenue, Brigantine NJ 08203 on Wednesday, January 17, 2018. Visitation is from to 2:30 p.m to 3:00 p.m, memorial service to follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Southern Ocean County Animal Facility, 360 Haywood Rd., Manahawkin, NJ 08050.
