Wayne C. Woodward Obituary
Wayne C. Woodward, of Garden Spot Village, New Holland, died on June 11 at the age of 88. He was the husband of Esther K. Woodward, with whom he shared 65 years of marriage. Born in Coatesville, Pennsylvania, where he lived for most of his life, he was the son of the late Herbert J. and Florence C. Woodward. He was a graduate of Coatesville High School (Class of 1947) and Ursinus College (Class of 1951), where he met his wife. After serving in the United States Navy during the Korean War era, he began his professional life as a newspaper reporter and columnist, first for the Coatesville Record and later for the Lancaster Intelligencer-Journal, before moving on to work for many years in local and county government. While still in his 20s he was elected to City Council in Coatesville and later served as city administrator there, after which he had a long career in various roles in Chester County government, including deputy controller and budget director. He retired in 1992. An avid historian and writer, Mr. Woodward wrote seven books on topics primarily related to local history and politics, as well as articles and shorter works. At the time of his death he had just completed an eighth book, on Pennsylvanians who figured prominently in the Revolutionary War, that his family hopes to publish in his memory. During retirement Mr. Woodward and his wife were able to travel widely and enjoy time with their children and grandchildren. His love of travel started early; at age 16 he hitchhiked to Niagara Falls and Mount Washington, and two years later from Coatesville to California and back. The daily letters he wrote to his parents on the California trip were published in the local newspaper and provide a fascinating account of travel through 15 states that lasted three weeks and cost $100. Mr. Woodward was a member of Doe Run Presbyterian Church in East Fallowfield Township, where he had served as a trustee and elder. In addition to his wife, Mr. Woodward is survived by his four sons, W. Steven Woodward, Thomas C. Woodward, David B. Woodward and Kevin J. Woodward, five grandchildren, and a sister, Edna Mae Stoner. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 16, in the chapel at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Avenue, New Holland, with visitation preceding the service at 10 a.m. Interment at a later date will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to The Chester County Historical Society, 225 N. High Street, West Chester, PA 19380 or Doe Run Presbyterian Church, 3104 Doe Run Church Road, East Fallowfield Township, PA 19320. To send on-line condolences, visit www.harrismountain.com.
