HAMPTON - Janie Doris Gabany of Hampton Virginia, passed away on November 18, 2013 after a brief illness. Gratefully she remained with us long enough to say our goodbyes. Born in Flora, Mississippi on March 22, 1932 she was the daughter of Benjamin and Pearlee Phillips. After graduating from high school in Mississippi she enlisted in the U.S. Army. Shortly thereafter she met a dashing U.S. sailor, Michael J. Gabany, whom she married and together had five children. She was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for many years before retiring to help raise her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Janie was an accomplished ceramic artist as well as at needle-point and crocheting. She volunteered much of her time at local community centers and VA hospital sharing her talent and teaching others. She was the rock of the family. She was predeceased by her husband Michael, her parents, her brother Buddy Phillips and her daughter Anita Gardner. She is survived by her brother Benjamin Phillips (Fay) and her sister Margaret Godbold from Mississippi, her sons Michael (Roxann) from Gloucester, Anthony (Chris) from Gloucester, Jeffrey Scott from Hampton, Jon (Jennifer) from Carmel, Indiana; Her grandchildren Shannon, Jason, Robert, Heidi, Brett, Michaella, Christina, Marin; and 10 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm on Friday, November 22, 2013 at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 10:00am Saturday, November 23, 2013 at R. Hayden Smith with internment to follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. Janie's favorite charity, which she supported every month, is the Salvation Army should a memoriam donation be desired in her memory.
