Charles Drury Rynex

WILLIAMSBURG - Charles Drury Rynex, 85, of Williamsburg, passed away on April 16, 2013. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Pattie Mae Cruise; his second wife, Helen May Hawkins; and his son, Paul H. Rynex. A lifelong Hokie fan, Charles graduated from Virginia Tech in 1951. Following graduation, he surveyed and helped in the building of the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia, a project of which he was always proud. He worked for the Department of Highways in Northern Virginia and then in a civilian capacity for the Army Corps of Engineers at Ft. Myer. Upon this foundation and his background in civil engineering, he began a career with NASA in Washington, D.C. that spanned over 25 years. He was project manager for the launch facilities in Cape Canaveral, FL, during the Gemini and Apollo missions, and retired shortly after the shuttle missions began. In each community Charles lived, he was actively involved in the churches he attended, most recently Williamsburg Community Chapel. Motivated by his deep faith, he served with the Gideon organization for many years. He loved travel and spending time at the beach, and was very devoted to his children. Together, they enjoyed many outdoor activities. Charles loved life and was a blessing to all those around him. Remaining to cherish his memory are his four children, John L. Rynex (Beverly); Nancy Rynex; Barbara R. Mares (Steve); and Charles Alan Rynex (Donna); eight grandchildren, Erikka, Michelle, Joshua, Matthew, Melissa, Abigail, Carley, and Delaney; and many great friends. The family will receive friends on Friday, April 19 from 10-11 AM at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd, Williamsburg, with a service beginning at 11 AM.
