Joseph Burke Jr.

NEWPORT NEWS - Joe was born in New York, N.Y. March 11, 1940, and died in Newport News, Va. May 17, 2013. Joe was very proud to have served his country for a total of 43 years with the US Air Force, 29 years on active duty and 14 years as a civilian. In 1958 he started his career with the USAF as a photographer at Kadena AB, Okinawa and Denham Air Station, England. In 1964 he attended the AFOSI agent school and served as a Special Agent in the AFOSI for the next 37 years. During active duty he served tours in Okinawa, England, Thailand, Philadelphia, California-including Language School to study the Thai language, Florida and Virginia. Among the awards and decorations he received were: The Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm. While in England, Joe met and married his wife, Ann, celebrating 50 years of marriage in 2012. After retirement a favorite pastime was to volunteer with the York County Historical Museum as an artifacts preservation leader and as a docent at The Poor Potter site in Yorktown. He was also an avid reader, loved and appreciated art, a lifelong student of history and enjoyed doing crosswords in ink without a dictionary. He will be missed very much by his wife, Ann, daughter AnnMarie (husband Scott, grandsons Scott J. and Christian); son Joseph (wife Jolene), daughter Barbara ( husband, Jeff and granddaughter Madeline), his brother Jim (wife Patty), family in England and many friends both here in the U.S. and England. We would wish to thank Dr. Chang, Lesley, Mary and all the staff at the Virginia Oncology Associates; and also the Heartland Hospice team and the staff at the Williamsburg Hospice House that took such great care of him in his final days. Ann would also like to thank all of her friends that gave such great support and affection during these past two years, it was much appreciated. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to Heartland Hospice, Williamsburg Hospice House, or The York County Historical Museum. The family will be receiving friends Thursday, May 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. A funeral service will full military honors will be held Friday, May 17 at 11 a.m. at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk.
