Maryanne Yarborough Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Maryanne Hill was born on March 23, 1934 in Norfolk, Virginia to parents Daniel Webster and Mary Davis Hill. God called her home in the early morning hours of December 25, 2013, after spending a love-filled day with her daughter and granddaughters. Maryanne received her early education in Norfolk Public Schools, graduating in 1951, with honors, from Booker T. Washington High School. After a brief marriage to the late Edgar "Red" Hoggard, she went on to further her education by first completing the Teacher's Program at Norfolk State in 1953, and then earning her B.S. in Elementary Education, with a minor in Music, in 1956 from Hampton Institute. Soon after, she began her inaugural teaching job, at Aberdeen Elementary School, in Hampton. After serving for two years, Mrs. Yarborough moved to Bremerhaven, Germany with her new husband, the late Arthur P. Yarborough. There, she continued to teach, as she did when the couple returned to the states, and lived (briefly) in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1963, Mrs. Yarborough returned to Aberdeen, where was a well-respected and much-loved 6th grade teacher. She earned her her M.A. in Education, also from Hampton Institute, in 1971, thus preparing for her next step up the ladder of her chosen career. After several years working as an Assistant Principal, she was selected to serve as Principal, first of Cesar Tarrant, and then of Tucker Capps Fundamental Elementary School. Tucker-Capps was the perfect fit for Mrs. Yarborough, who always held high expectations for both students, and staff, thus creating an atmosphere of EXCELLENCE in the school that she loved. Her last stop as a Hampton City Schools employee was to be Burbank Elementary, a school with a friendly staff and a family atmosphere that quickly won her over. In 1991, Mrs. Yarborough retired from Hampton City Schools. Throughout her tenure, she'd built relationships with teachers, parents, staff, and even community leaders (including Mayor James Eason) which continually led to positive and successful learning environments for her students. Mrs. Yarborough was a faithful and dedicated member of Queen Street Baptist Church, for almost 50 years. She held many leadership positions, but was, most notably, the Director and pianist for the Millie Patrick Children's Choir, Assistant Superintendent of Sunday School, a Sunday School teacher, and Supervisor of the QSBC Outreach Program. Mrs. Yarborough was also an involved community citizen, having served on the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board for many years, and as a member of the Aberdeen Community Association. She was a member Delta Kappa Gamma, the International Society for Key Women Educators. Socially, she was a charter member of "The Birthday Girls", a group of retired educators, who got together each month to relax, dine, and celebrate birthdays. She also loved to travel, and did so as often as possible before her health began to fail. Mrs. Yarborough was preceded in death by her (former) husband, Arthur, and her son, Arthur, Jr. She is survived by two sons: Edgar, of Virginia Beach, VA, and Henry (Valerie), of Pensacola, FL; a daughter, Renate Sanders, of Newport News, VA; eight grandchildren, Russell, Roland, Robert, Raijah, Vaughn, Jason, Natasha, and Natalia; two great-grandchildren, Jeneva and Rowan; a brother, Howell Hill, Sr. (Frances), and a sister, J. Gwendolyn Daniels (Fredrick). She will also be dearly missed by her adopted family, the Brights, a dear friend, Ann Marshall, and a host of other loved ones who were dear to her heart. Mrs. Yarborough will be available for viewing on Sunday, December 29, 2013 from 12 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home, with the family visitation between 4 and 5 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Queen Street Baptist Church, North; 98 Armistead Avenue on Monday, December 30, at 12:00 noon. Interment will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens. Professional services are entrusted to Ronald C. Perkins Funeral Home, 251 W. Queen St. in Hampton.

Mrs. Yarborough was the most influential teacher in my lifetime. She had a profound effect on my development in the sixth grade at Ceaser Tarrant and at Sinclair Elementary School in Hampton, VA. She was great friends with my mother Georgetta Moore. I couldn't get away with anything. LOL. RIP Mrs. Yarborough.

I just learned of Mrs. Yarborough's passing today and want to extend my condolences to her family. She was such a remarkable woman, and impacted so many of us for life. I am a graduate of Hampton City Schools, and of all the wonderful educators who helped mold me into the high school teacher I am today, Mrs. Yarborough is the standout. She had unwavering, deliberate, and very high expectations for each of us. Not "all," but "each." She knew our names and favorite things to do. She respected our young emotions, but modeled strength and perseverance so we learned to push on when things seemed difficult. She made sure students had their individual needs met, whether they were struggling to keep up or not being challenged enough. I cried when I had to leave Tucker-Capps Elementary School and go on to junior high. Mrs. Yarborough hugged me and told me I'd be just fine. I cried again when I saw she had passed, because I know if she made such an impact on me as a child...I can only imagine how her family feels. I'm sorry for your loss, and grateful for the time I had with Mrs. Yarborough.

Mary Yarborough's office was in my library at Mallory giving me a chance to see her as others might not have. She taught me to expect more from other than I probably would have. I definitely have carried her memory with me down through the years.

I was sadden to hear about Mrs. Yarborough's passing. She was a great principal at Cesar Tarrant. I remember when she would let me read the announcements over the PA system. I would see her during my years as a child living in Granger Court and she'd tell your parents if you weren't acting right. She will be missed and remembered by many.
