Arthur H. CARMONY Obituary
POQUOSON - Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather and Friend; Arthur Hobert "Jitterbug" Carmony, 87, passed away peacefully after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He went to be with his heavenly Father on March 7, 2012.
Born in Ewing, Va., on May 6, 1924, he was the sixth of 11 children of the late John and Lula Carmony. He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps and left the western area of Virginia for Poquoson, pursuing baseball and a job as a truck driver. In his early 20's, he enjoyed dancing and at one of the many venues, obtained the nickname "Jitterbug." In his later years, he resided in Hampton. He retired in 1986 from the Newport News Shipyard, after 32 years of long and faithful service. After his retirement, he enjoyed travelling, spending time with family-especially his grandchildren- and friends, woodworking, watching NASCAR races, attending softball and little league baseball games, and tending to his yard and garden. Until the last few years when his health continued to decline, he regularly attended and was an active member of Bethel Baptist Church in Yorktown.
Arthur was preceded in death by his loving wife of 28 years, Phyllis Carmony; and seven siblings, Paul, Johnny, Lilley, Edith," Cleve," Irene, and "Kat."
He leaves to cherish his memory his children, Betsy Page and husband, Vernon, Belinda Rowe and husband, Clifton, Bubba Carmony and wife, Melinda, Sheila Hairr and husband, Greg, Gary Anderson and wife, Melinda, Russ Carraway and wife, Sally, and Candy Carraway; grandchildren, Brian, Robbie, Paul, Cliff, Tammy, Jeff, Michael, Amanda, Tabitha, Chris, Tim, Eric, Samantha, Jamie, and Elijah; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Walter; sisters, Esther and Crestful; special friend, Sarah Mitchell; and many loving family members and dear friends.
The family extends their thanks to Dr. Mark Fleming and the great team at US Oncology for their years of professional and caring treatment; and to his wonderful caregivers at Elite Eldercare, where he was living, (Jack, Toni, Nehemiah, Nick, Angela, and many others) for their professional, compassionate, and loving care in meeting his spiritual, physical, and emotional needs.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 11, 2012, at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 12, 2012, at Bethel Baptist Church, 1004 Yorktown Road, Yorktown, VA 23693, officiated by Pastors Doug Echols and Ryan Davidson. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Elite Eldercare, 11 San Jose Drive, Newport News, VA 23606 or Bethel Baptist Church.
