Avis C. HUNT Obituary
POQUOSON - Avis Corinne Hunt, a native and lifelong resident of Poquoson, passed away at Mary Immaculate Hospital, Newport News, on July 4, 2011, at the age of 97.
She was a lifetime member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church in Poquoson and had attended regularly as long as she was able. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, the Adult Bible Class, the Phillips Hunt Circle, and had been a First Grade Sunday School teacher. She was also a member of the Charles Parish Chapter NSDAR.
Miss Hunt graduated from Poquoson High School in 1931, attended Longwood University (then Farmville State Teachers College) and graduated from the University of Virginia. She was a teacher at Poquoson Elementary School, for 37 years, and was a charter member of Poquoson Retired Teachers Association. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and creating many beautiful things. During her retirement years, she crocheted many lap robes giving them to friends and local nursing homes in Poquoson and York County at Christmas.
Miss Hunt was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Frank and Viola Carmines Hunt; and an infant sister.
She is survived by cousins, Sara Margaret C. Smith of Lexington, S.C., Rosanna H. White, Elvira S. Thomas, and Willis Eugene Hunt Sr., all of Poquoson; special cousins, Martha S. Tooley of Newport News, and Nancy R. Martin of Poquoson; and two loving cats who will miss her very much, Fluffy and Muffy. She leaves behind many other cousins and friends.
She was blessed in having very good caregivers for many years. The family thanks Annie Wilkins, Jacqueline Snoxell, and Diane Danforth, for their faithful and loving care, along with Joanne Roberts for volunteering good and kind service to her for many years. Also thanks to Nancy R. Martin, who was always willing to help.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home, 836 Poquoson Ave., Poquoson. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at Tabernacle United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dr. Bill Wash. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton.
