Bea Smith Obituary
POQUOSON - Bertha Jean "Bea" Smith, 97, passed away on January 13, 2017 in Hampton, Virginia. Born in 1919 in Homer City, PA, to Ben and Mary DeMatteis, she married Ralph L. Smith in 1945. They were wed for 48 years before Ralph died in 1993. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her son Dwayne Wallace Smith, and her brothers John, Louis and Angelo. She is survived by daughters Judy Green of Poquoson, VA and Laurie Buggey of Moyock, NC; three granddaughters, Erika Johnson of Cary, NC, Jana Nussen of Poquoson, and Kristi DelGrande of Downington, PA; and six great-grandchildren. Bea enjoyed a very long and active life. Feisty and outspoken, she lived most of her life in Homer City, and graduated from what is now Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh in 1941. She spent many years volunteering with the March of Dimes organization, and later was a social worker with Indiana County, PA, not retiring until she was in her seventies. In her later years, she enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The Family will hold a Memorial service at 11:00 AM on Monday, January 23, 2017 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 807 West Mercury Blvd. in Hampton. A luncheon featuring some of Bea's favorite foods will follow the service, and all attendees to the memorial service are invited. In lieu of flowers please feel free to make a donation to .
