POQUOSON - Bonnie R. Ferreira, 95, died at home in Poquoson on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 attended by family and friends. Bonnie was born in Santa Ana, California, to Leroy Darst and Ella Oberg Darst. She spent her younger years in Huntington Beach, California, where she grew up loving the beach, surfing, and playing beach volleyball. She attended Cal State Fullerton, and was a member of the Alpha Theta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi. During her career, Bonnie worked in the retail clothing business, then became a Research and Development Technician for RCA and TRW in California where she proudly worked on B-17 Bombers during World War II. She was a R & D team member on the successful Lunar Excursion Module in the NASA Space Program. Upon retirement in 1970, she moved with her husband, Carl, to the San Francisco Bay area, prior to settling in Virginia in 1973. In 1974 Bonnie and Carl established Carbo Enterprises, a real estate investment and management company. They ran this successful business for over 30 years. Bonnie was a charter and very active member and past officer of the Islander Garden Club. She was also a member of the Old Point Comfort Yacht Club and founding member of the Poquoson Yacht Club. She and Carl were also charter members of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church, and Bonnie helped establish and run the Parish Thrift Shop in Poquoson. She also volunteered at the Poquoson Museum. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 52 years, Carl, her sister, Jacqueline Nightingale, and her son, Jeffrey D. Rhodes. Bonnie is survived by grandchildren, Jessica Grigoleit of Yorktown, VA, Jason Rhodes and wife April of Warner Robins, GA, Justin Rhodes of Yorktown, VA, and six great-grandchildren Shelby (Evan), Shawn, Jared, Alexander, Alissa, and Jacob. The family thanks all the faithful friends who visited and prayed for Bonnie, with special recognition to her caregiver, Juli Fisk, for her loving care and devotion. The family and friends will celebrate Bonnie's life at a Mass of the Resurrection Saturday, January 14, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church, 3800 Big Bethel Road, Tabb, Virginia. Father Robert Spencer will preside. A reception will follow at the church. She will be inurned with her husband at Saint Kateri Tekakwitha in the Columbarium built by her husband, Carl. In lieu of flowers, Bonnie asked for memorial donations to the Poquoson Fire and Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 2099, Poquoson, VA 23662 or the Children 's Hospital of the King's Daughters, P.O.
