Doris H. Rawls Obituary
Doris H. Rawls, 91, of Newport News, passed from this world on Friday, June 8, 2018. Doris was born and raised in Grantsboro, NC, and then attended Appalachian State, where she played basketball and received her degree in Education. In 1947, she married Marion W. Rawls, and moved to Newport News. They were married for 66 years until he passed away in 2013. Doris taught school, most of her career as a 5th grade teacher at Jenkins Elementary. She was a member of Hilton Christian Church, where she taught children and served as a deaconess and leader in the Women's Circle. Doris was preceded in death by her husband Marion; her parents, Wilmont and Verna Harrison; her brother Franklin Harrison; her sisters, Evelyn Lee and Elsie Holliday; and her grandson Richard Gordon Rawls. She is survived by two sons: Loyd Rawls (and wife JoAnne), of Newport News, and Larry Rawls (and wife Tricia) of Hilton Head Island, SC; one daughter: Marcia Willis (and husband Sam) of Tallahassee, FL; four grandsons: Gordon Rawls (and wife Amy) of Midlothian, VA, Thomas Rawls (and wife Cara) of Midlothian, VA, William Rawls (and wife Lisa) of Falls Church, VA, and Matthew Rawls of Layton, UT; five great-grandchildren: Kathleen Rawls, Ian Rawls, Henry Rawls, Emma Rawls, and Laura Jo Rawls; and one brother Wesley Harrison. Kind, generous, smart, and always positive, Doris was a great lady, and will be greatly missed. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM Thursday, June 14, 2018 at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM with Pastor Thomas Rawls officiating. Burial will be at 3 PM at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk. Arrangements by W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home.
