Dowell S. White Obituary
POQUOSON - Dowell S. White, 91, a lifelong resident of Poquoson, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2014 following a 9-month decline. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Godwin "Bud" White, and her parents, Lettie and Tom Simpson. Dowell is survived by two sons, Tom (Pat) of Williamsburg, and David (Debra) of Chesapeake; three grandchildren, Christina, Rachel, and Jeffrey; and great-grandchild, McKinley. She is also survived by beloved aunt, Elethia Diggs, and numerous devoted cousins. Dowell completed Poquoson public schools and, after many years as a homemaker, in her mid-forties attended Hampton Roads Business College. Upon completion she was employed by the City of Poquoson and served as Clerk to City Council and Chief Accounting Officer for twenty years before retiring in 1988. Dowell was a faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church her entire life, serving many years as Sunday School teacher for sixth-graders, and for the Ladies Bible Class until three months before her death. She served in many other capacities at the church including its Administrative Board, Marion Page Circle, UMW, and Trinity Fund Raisers. She treasured her family and many friendships throughout the Poquoson community and delivered Meals on Wheels well into her later years. Dowell was a frequent visitor to assisted care and nursing facilities, and friends' homes, usually delivering her world-famous chocolate pies and chocolate fudge cakes! She lived alone the past 25 years and took great pleasure in maintaining her home and yard by herself until her illness prevented it. Her sons are grateful for the devoted assistance of very special cousin Linda Smith, and neighbors Gary Gillikin, Dwayne Baynard, and Jenny Chapman, that allowed their mother to remain in her home until the final two months of her life. During her final two months, in addition to family and friends, the dedicated staffs of Bayside and Dominion Village in Poquoson offered professional and loving care. The family will receive friends tonight, from 7:00-8:30pm at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home, Poquoson, and other times at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 1 pm on Tuesday, January 14 at Trinity United Methodist Church, Poquoson by Rev. Charles R. Stacy and Rev. George T. Insley Jr.,followed by burial in Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 1294 Poquoson Ave., or to the Poquoson Fire and Rescue Squad, 830 Poquoson Ave., or the Messick Cemetery Association, 262 Little Florida Rd., all in Poquoson, VA, 23662.
