Edwin Samuel Herring Sr. Obituary
POQUOSON - Edwin Samuel Herring Sr., 93, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 29, 2013 in Florida. He was a native of Chadbourn, NC, and a Hampton resident since 1952 before moving to Poquoson in 1997. He retired from Newport News Shipbuilding in 1983 as a Welding Supervisor after 32 years. In 1986, Ed & Barbara became "Snowbirds" and spent winters in LaBelle, FL. He was a WWII Navy veteran, and a member of Memorial Baptist Church, Hampton. Ed loved vegetable gardening his entire life, and enjoyed giving veggies to his friends as much as providing for his family. He enjoyed fishing, and was an avid NASCAR fan. He had a passion for restoring '67 & '68 Mustangs, and brought 10 "back to life" over the years in his garage on Lee St., 5 of which are still in the family. Besides providing a comfortable life for his family, Ed's main goal was always doing for others. Ed was preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, Barbara; daughter, Pat Duncan; and brother, Charles Herring. He is survived by his sons, Edwin S. "Sam" Herring Jr. & wife Bonnie of Newport News, and Richard D. "Rick" Herring & wife Susan of Poquoson; grandchildren, David M. Herring & wife Leigh of Powhatan, VA, Lisa H. Legeer & husband Jeff of Jacksonville, FL, Heather H. Gauthier & husband Dennis of Poquoson, Taylor A. Herring & wife Sabrina of Newport News, Stephanie Hilbourn & husband Tim of Whiteville, NC, and Michelle Thompson & husband Heath of Bladenboro, NC; great-grandchildren, Emily Alexander of Jacksonville, Zoe Gauthier of Poquoson, David "DJ" Herring, and Kennedy Herring, both of Powhatan; and son-in-law, Calvin Duncan of Clarkton, NC. The family will receive friends Saturday, 12:30-1:00 PM, at Parklawn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, Hampton, immediately followed by a funeral service at 1 PM in the Chapel by Rev. Milford C. Rollins. Burial will follow in the cemetery. Claytor Rollins Funeral Home, Poquoson, is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences to claytorrollins.com . "Always tough as nails, Dad never complained during his two year battle with cancer, and was not in pain during his last days and able to wish his family a Merry Christmas on the phone."
