George D. Harris Jr.

Obituary Condolences

NEWPORT NEWS - The guitar playing, George Dudley Harris Jr., headed for the best and biggest jam of all on Nov. 25, 2008.
His wife of 54 years, Janet Harris, was there to greet him. Now that was a celebration! Mr. Harris was born on Oregon Hill in Richmond , Va., on June 20, 1930, and moved to the Newport News vicinity in 1942. His parents were the late Mary Virginia and George D. Harris.
Mr. Harris is survived by his daughter, Linda Lee and grandson, John Harrison Dragnich; his son, Sonny and his wife, Ginna and grandsons, Andrew McMillian Harris and Allen Windsor Harris. He is also survived by his brother, William Stuart and his wife, Gayle; his sister, Jane Elizabeth Harris Mahone and his brother, Robert Frederick and his wife, Carolyn and all of his brothers' and sister's children and grandchildren. In addition Mr. Harris is survived by his wife's sister's boys, Parker and Louis Nicholls, and their wonderful families. They have lost their older brother, their Uncle Brother, their Uncle Harris, their Uncle George and a true friend.
For years Mr. Harris worked at the C & O Railroad, retiring in 1970.While working there, he started his own little side business delivering pine bark mulch which grew into George D Harris & Son. In 1953, Mr. Harris learned to play the guitar and began his love affair with bluegrass music. In 2003, Mr. Harris was named the recipient of the VFMA Special Recognition Award. Between the C&O, bluegrass and hunting, he made life long friends who offered their best to him over his 78 years. Mr. Harris was always a strong healthy man but when his wife Janet died in 2005, it seemed the life force went out of him. When his heart beat for the last time on Tuesday night, Sonny and his friend, Don Harris, were by Mr. Harris' side as Mr. Harris peacefully passed from this world to join his Lord. Mr. Harris carried this verse in his wallet and in his heart, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" and he really could. We already miss him.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday evening, Dec. 1, at Peninsula Funeral Home. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, at Faith Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, you may decide to remember Mr. Harris by contributing to the Animal Aid Society in Newport News. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.
