Geroge W. PEAKE Obituary
HAMPTON - George Watson Peake, 96, passed away Sunday, March 11, 2012.
Born in the Copeland family home at Bloxom's Corner, Hampton, he was a lifelong Hampton resident, who graduated from Hampton High School and played football while there. He retired from Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company after 45 years service. Mr. Peake was involved in many civic organizations during his lifetime, including past president of the Phoebus Recreation Association, past president of the Chesapeake Lion's Club, member of Telephone Pioneers of Virginia, and was the oldest member of Monitor Lodge #197 AF&AM at the time of his death. At one time he was a volunteer member of the Buckroe Fire Department.
He was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 76 years, Sarah Cross Peake; parents, Robert and Louisa Peake; and brothers, Robert Jr. and James Peake.
Survivors include his two daughters and sons-in-law, Jo Ann and Albert Markel, and Nancy and Robert Miller; four grandchildren, Jeff Markel, Nancy Reynolds, Kris Miller and Robert Miller Jr.; seven great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Gladys Peake; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Ave., downtown Hampton. A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, at Parklawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Brian K. Sixbey officiating.
Memorials may be in the form of donations to the , Hampton Roads Chapter, Interstate Corporate Center Building 20, Suite 233, Norfolk 23502; or to First United Methodist Church, Fox Hill Memorial Fund, 1 Salt Ponds Road, Hampton 23664.
