NEWPORT NEWS - Gretchen Hawley Burnette, 82, died Friday, June 25, 2004, at Riverside Regional Medical Center. A native of Rocky Mount, N.C., she had been a Peninsula resident for 61 years. She was retired from the Newport News Shipyard. She was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Newport News. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Alexander W. Burnette Jr. and Oscar Stone Burnette. She is survived by two brothers, M. Clifton Burnette and wife, Anne, and William R. Burnette and wife, Betsy; and one niece and four nephews. A graveside service will be conducted at noon today at Peninsula Memorial Park by the Rev. Howard W. Saunders III. Arrangements are under the care of Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 N. Armistead Ave., Hampton.
