Helen Virginia Apperson Shifler, 94, a native and lifelong resident of Newport News, daughter of Richard R. Apperson, died May 7, 2021 in Williamsburg, where she had resided since 1994.
Mrs. Shifler graduated from Newport News High School in 1943 and attended Longwood College, Farmville, VA. She was a member of Reformation Lutheran Church where she served as Sunday School teacher, Secretary to the Pastor and the Church Council, and was a life member of the United Lutheran Church Women. She was active for ten years in the Heritage Girl Scout Council as both a Junior and Cadette troop leader, Service Unit, and Day Camp Directors. She retired from the Newport News Baptist Retirement Community, now known as the Chesapeake, as Secretary to the Administrator, Dr. R. Furman Kenney, and a Medical Secretary in the Health Care Unit.
She is survived by four daughters: Margaret Theresa (Teri) S. Nalley, of Ocean Sands, NC; Kathleen (Kathy) S. Muller Fitzgerald (Tim), of Oak Island, NC; Karen S. Stahl (Rob), of New Castle, VA; and Donna S. Jones (Preston), of Williamsburg. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Sean and Sam Muller, of Lake George, NY; Abbey S. Mattos (Javier), of Pulaski, VA; Beth S. Sterner (Matt), of New Castle, VA; Robbie S. Stahl (Kim), of Pataskala, OH; and Christopher S. Nalley, of Lynchburg, VA; as well as great grandchildren: (twins) Esther and Ethan, Alex and Lani, Caleb and Samantha Mattos, Malcolm and Kaylee Sterner, and Chloe, Ariella, Phin and Neil Stahl.
