DANDY, VA - In loving memory of Hester Saunders Ward 75 , of Dandy VA , who died from complications of Covid 19 earlier this month. She was born in Hampton VA. April 6th, 1945, daughter of Violet Freeman Saunders and John S Saunders. She was a long time Hampton resident residing in the back of the "Saunders Family Store" until later moving into the family home her father built on Topping lane. She graduated from Hampton High School with honors in 1963, after which she found her way into a civil service career at the Hampton V.A. hospital. She retired as the CHAMPUS Coordinator and assistant to the Commanding Medical Officer of the medical clinic at Fort Monroe. Hester married William Dale (Bill) Ward in November of 1967. They raised 3 children, Joshua, Brendyn and Blaire, for 17 years in First Colony of Williamsburg, VA, later moving the family to historic Dandy, VA in 1989 where their roots truly dug in on the banks of the York River and Chesapeake Bay. Hester would want to be remembered as a loving and loyal wife and friend and for her humorous view of life. She clearly left her mark on all of us fortunate enough to have lived in her world. Granny's fudge cake, Thanksgiving Dinner, Christmas Breakfast, coffee on the porch, dog treats hidden in pockets, limitless play time with her Grand Baby Bristol, trips in the big van, and other such blessings will live in our hearts forever.

To say she will be missed by many is an understatement. Arrangements by Amory Funeral Home, Grafton, VA.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. Hester was such a ‘breath of fresh air.’ She meant so much to our mother, Ruth, as you all did. They are rejoicing in heaven for sure.

You are in our thoughts and prayers.

This is such a well written obituary, Hester had unending LOVE for all her family. I remember countless times when I'd see her in the "Big Van" and she would always have her kids and Aunt Violet with her, all of them smiling and enjoying life. All I have to do to enjoy life is remember times like those, they're the times that make life worth living. Hester is now in heaven with her Mom, Dad, and Sisters preparing a great reunion for us all.

Dear sweet Hester..I was so devastated to hear of your passing..you were so very scared of this virus and I hate that it took you away from us far to soon..I so enjoyed our lunches out and the time we spent together and doing your hair, of course..God has definitely gained an Angel who will be looking down on us, especially her family, who she adored..Keep smiling Hester...Love forever and always, Lisa Kim

In loving memory of a wonderful person. Heaven gained a beautiful angel. I grew up with them across the street from us until they moved from First Colony. Lots of great memories and fun times. My love and prayers to Bill, Josh, Brendyn, Blair and the rest of the family.

Mrs. Ward was such a sweet person and neighbor. I loved getting text from her about the eagles and other wildlife out in front of our homes. I wish I had been able to get to know her better. Our love and prayers to all of her family and friends.

Hester will forever live in all of us who knew her and had the honor of ‘hanging out’ at family picnics, small gatherings & ‘ talks ‘ on the phone. I loved her like an aunt— but - she was my cousin. She was truly the best example of a ‘Southern Belle’ -but don’t think you could walk all over her’- this is what made me admire her so so much! She made everything seem so easy!!!! I will forever hold memories of our ‘good ole family gatherings’ where we would gather to celebrate..... whatever and none of us knew ‘how we were related ‘ & didn’t really care!!! Dale, You & Hester were such a ‘great example’ of what True Live looks like! Josh, Brendan & Blair- every time I read your Facebook post or see each one of you- I see her ‘love’ in each of you! & Bristol!!!! I can see her ‘twinkling eyes’- always keep her memory alive!!! Heaven has truly gained our Hester—- what a grand ‘family gathering’ they are having!!!!

Love you all- more than you know!

Cousin- really thought I was her neice! I am heartbroken
