POQUOSON - Howard G. "Duddy" Forrest Jr., 89, died Tuesday, March 14, 2017. He was the husband of Betty Cox Forrest, and a native and resident of Poquoson before moving to The Chesapeake retirement community, Newport News. He was the son of the late H. Garland Forrest and Nonie Amory Forrest. He was also preceded in death by his infant daughter, Nonie Elizabeth; a sister, Dorabelle F. Cox; and a sister-in-law, Lucille Cox Pace. He is survived by his sons, Howard G. Forrest III, and Kenneth Melvin Forrest and wife, Marty; two granddaughters, Corie Forrest and Kelli Forrest; a great-granddaughter, Lucianna Sandoval; two step-grandchildren; a nephew, Richard Cox; and several extended family members. Duddy attended VPI before leaving to serve in the U.S. Army. He was employed at Newport News Shipbuilding for 39 years, retiring in 1987 as a Contract Administrator. He was a member of Tabernacle UMC where he had previously served on the Administrative Board, Chairman of Evangelism, and member of the Men's Chorus. Duddy's former service at his home church, Trinity UMC and St. Lukes' UMC included Sunday School Teacher, Board Member, and Lay Leader. He served as Worship Chairman at The Chesapeake. Duddy's community service on the Peninsula included being an organizer of Troop 51 and Cub Pack 51, BSA; President of Poquoson Lions Club and being named a Melvin Jones Fellow; Chairman of Poquoson School Board; Poquoson Town Council; Chairman of Poquoson's Economic Development Committee; Mayor, City of Poquoson; Chairman of Thomas Nelson Community College Advisory Board; President of the TNCC Foundation Board; and Member of the Virginia Baptist Homes Foundation Board. A Memorial service will be held at Tabernacle United Methodist Church, Poquoson on Saturday, March 18, 2017, 11:00 AM, led by Rev. Dr. James N. Earley II and Rev. Dr. Nancy Hayes.
