James Augustus Thurman Obituary
POQUOSON - James Augustus Thurman (Colonel USAF-Retired) passed away peacefully at Riverside Hospital August 12th, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. Born June 23rd, 1930 in Talladega, Alabama, Jim was one of three sons to Wesley and Frances Thurman of 514 Coffee Street. Wesley was the stationmaster at the Talladega train station. Older brother Mitchell was a naval aviator and commercial pilot, while brother Bill was an inventor and worked for the TVA. Jim travelled the world as an Air force pilot. His wife Beverly Jane (deceased 1998) and his four children accompanied him while stationed in Germany, Wisconsin, Alabama, Texas, Florida, The Pentagon, The Philippines, with a last tour at Langley AFB. He served in Vietnam, flying close air support for our troops. "The Colonel", weary of flying a desk, retired in Poquoson after 25 years of service. In his later years Jim enjoyed fishing, golfing, books, movies, gardening as a master gardener, cooking, baking and grilling. He played bridge and travelled extensively with his loving companion, Yuko S. Richter. "The Colonel" was a gifted storyteller, always making new friends, even on his last day on earth! Jim's extended family and troop of friends will miss his quick smile and stories. He is survived by daughters Sarah Gail Hackel (husband Bob, Hamilton, MT) and Rhonda Marie Dunkum (husband Roy, Smithfield, VA); sons Spencer Jay (wife Gabrielle, Magnolia, WV) and James Allen (Waldorf, MD); granddaughters Samantha, Amy, Lindsey, Summer and Emma; grandsons Daniel, Andrew and Asa; great granddaughters Savannah and the soon to be welcomed, Shelby Rae. Many nieces and nephews and all his extended family carry on his traditions. Our gratitude goes to his caregivers (his ground-crew) during our Daddy's last days. They helped him to make his last flight! The Colonel will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery beside his wife Beverly- date to be determined. A Celebration of His Life will be held Sunday afternoon August 28 from 2-5 pm at 15 Canal Drive in Poquoson.
