James Edward Hawkins Obituary
James Edward Hawkins, affectionately known as "Hawk", departed this life on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at the Hampton Veterans Affairs Hospital. He was born in Louisburg, NC on April 15, 1933 to the late Hubert E. Hawkins, Sr. and Pattie Pearl Hawkins. James graduated from G.W. Carver High School in 1951 and served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953. He was later employed with the Newport News Shipbuilding from which he retired in 1995 after 29 years of service. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Barbara Hawkins; three children, Edwin Hawkins, Sheila James, and Michael Cornelius; five grandchildren, Tracey Hawkins Stein, Ebonie Griffin, Elissia Roberts, Alecia Oliver, and Ebrandon Hawkins; three great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Marissa Griffin and Xavier Roberts; one brother, Wilbert Hawkins; one sister, Lettie Hawkins, a devoted caretaker, Kimberly Morris; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family and friends. Viewing will be held from 12 Noon until 6:00 pm, Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, 1601 27th Street, Newport News. A celebration of his life will be held 11:00 am, Thursday, September 20, 2018 at the chapel. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens.
