POQUOSON - Col. Jerry P. Dougherty (USAF Ret.), 76, a native of New Mexico, and Poquoson resident for thirty years, passed away Thursday, October 31, 2013. He retired in 1990 from the U. S. Air Force as a Bio-Environmental Engineer after 30 years of service, during which he earned the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, AF Commendation Medal, AF Outstanding Unit Award, National Defense Service Medal, and AF Overseas Long Tour Ribbon with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, AF Longevity Service Award Ribbon with 6 Oak Leaf Clusters, Small Arms Expert Markmanship Ribbon, and AF Training Ribbon. He was a Distinguished Member of Academy of Civil, Agricultural, and Geological Engineers for 25 years. Jerry earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering from New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, where he was also a Member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, and received a Master's degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Oklahoma in 1972. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Yorktown, VA, and was a member & past president of the Poquoson chapter of Kiwanis. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Ina Edness & Wayne H. Dougherty. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Jean Rayroux Dougherty; son, Keith A. Dougherty & wife, Carol of Crystal Lake, IL; daughters, Karen R. Brignac & husband, Stephen of St. Francisville, LA, and Kimberly E. Dougherty of Newport News, VA; four grandchildren, Kristen Brignac, Alexander Brignac, Ryan Dougherty, and Matthew Dougherty; brother, Jim Dougherty & wife, Dorothea of Las Cruces; and a large number of loving family members in Carlsbad. A Memorial service will be held Monday, 2:00 PM, at Grace Episcopal Church by The Rev. Carleton Bakkum and The Rev. Constance Jones, followed by a reception at the church. Burial, with full military honors, will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
