POQUOSON - John Hildrey Insley Jr., 84, a native and lifelong resident of Poquoson, shook hands with his Lord on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, surrounded by his family.
John was born on Feb. 11, 1928, in Messick and was the son of the late John Hildrey and Sally Margaret Holloway Insley. He graduated from Poquoson High School in 1945 and Newport News Apprentice School in Design in 1952. John went on to serve in the U.S. Army during WWII in the Philippines and received the WWII Victory medal. After returning home he went to work for Tenneco and retired from the Newport News Shipbuilding (Tenneco) as a nuclear engineering manager after 46 years. John was one of the first of eight nuclear engineers who started in the shipyard Atomic Power Division (APD).
John was a member of the Society of Naval Architect and Marine Engineers (SNAME). He was also a member of Holloway-Moore Poquoson American Legion Post 273 for 63 years. He helped build the Post Home. He had also been a member of the Poquoson Ruritan Club and J.O.U.A.M, Yorktown Council #66 for many years. He was a lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he served on the Board and taught Sunday school for 23 years. He was one of the first members of the George W. Amos men's choir at Trinity where he dearly loved to sing. He was also a member of the Trinity Wesley Fellowship class and United Methodist Men's Club.
John always enjoyed boating and water skiing with his three precious daughters. He and Beana enjoyed traveling the world together and was always ready for their next trip. He or "Johnny" (as he was known by his family), was a very loving, caring, gentle man and wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who always gave freely his love and support to his family and friends.
John was also preceded in death by his brothers, Albert B. Insley, William E. Insley, and James Insley; and sisters-in-law, Alberta Insley and Shelly Insley.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years and best friend, Beana Marie Via Insley; daughters, Laura May Insley of Newport News, Margaret Anne Insley of Newport News, and Joan Beana Insley Lawrence and husband, Eric of Hagerstown, Md.; sisters, Mary Emily Martin and Margaret Jane Robinson, both of Stewartstown, Pa.; grandchildren, Mason Ashley Ballard and wife, Lisa of San Diego, Calif., Ryland Booker Ballard and wife, Leann of Warwick, R.I., and Chelsea Marie, Katelyn Michelle, Olivia Rhea, Joshua Eric, Jordan Keith-Amate Lawrence, all of Hagerstown, Md.; great-grandchildren, Kenneth Stone Ballard, Isabella Pase Kelsey, and Kevin Kairnes; two dear friends, Louann McIntosh and Shana Sharp of Suffolk; and many cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.
The family will receive friends Thursday, Sept. 20, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home, Poquoson, and other times at the family home. A funeral service will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, Poquoson by the Rev. Charles R. Stacy and Pastor Donald G. Marsh. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton, with Army and American Legion honors.
