John Hill "Papa" Gardner Jr. Obituary
Papa passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on June 28th at the age of 92.
Papa was born in James City County and lived here his entire life. He was one of 13 children. He proudly served his Country in the Army during WWII at The Battle of The Bulge for which he received the Bronze Star.
He was a lifelong member of Olive Branch Christian Church serving as an Elder, Deacon, Treasurer, Chairman of the Board, Sunday School Teacher, Youth Leader, and Choir member.
He was a volunteer for the James City County Rescue Squad. He was awarded an Honorary Membership from the Ruritan Club. He served as one of the original members of the Norge Waterworks before it became the James City County Service Authority. He was a member of the VFW. He coached several women's softball teams in the Summer Leagues.
He worked hard his entire life and retired after 30 years of service with Henry S. Branscome, LLC when he was 79 years old.
The accomplishment he was most proud of was his family. He loved fishing, football (The Redskins), baseball (The Yankees), traveling with his grandchildren across the country, gathering around the table with his family and friends with a bushel of steamed crabs, cooking pancakes for his family on Christmas morning, and playing cards with his brothers.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John Hill and Clay Bond Gardner, Sr. His brothers, Delly, Mac, Neal, Henry and Dan. His Sisters Thelma Williams, Frances Williams, Jill Moore, Jackie Nuttall, Elizabeth Davis, and Christine Bell. His Son, John Locke Gardner, Son-in-law Joseph Kirby, and treasured great granddaughter Jesse Grace Hall.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 65 years, Grace Greene Gardner, his children Evelyn Kirby, Terri-Clay Edwards (Jim), Thomas Gardner (Debbie), Joseph Gardner (Jennifer), adopted daughters Nancy Carswell (Robert) and Courtney Holt (Jon-Eric), 9 Grandchildren: Michael Hall (Soosan), Kathy Kirby, Hope, Hillary, Haley, Haven, Tommy Jr., Tucker, Taylor and 6 Great Grandchildren: Holden, Christine, Johnny, Elijah, Malakai, and Bella. He is also survived by one Sister, Dale Teagle and countless nieces, nephews and close friends.
A service honoring his life will be held at Olive Branch Christian Church 7643 Richmond Road, Williamsburg, VA 23188 on Saturday July 14th at 11:00 am with a Reception immediately following the service in the Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, the Family requests donations to be made in his honor to CHKD P.O. Box 2156, Norfolk, VA 23501-2156.
