Kathleen S. Getman, 91, passed away peacefully at her home Monday, November 12, surrounded by family. She was born at home July 23, 1927, in Dansville, New York, the youngest of Louis and Rosella (Bricks) Smyder's five children. She graduated from Ilion High School (N.Y.) in 1945 and lived in Cleveland, Ohio, for several years while working as a secretary. She married Robert J. Getman in 1949 and they settled in West Point in 1959. "Kay" spent the first 25 years of her marriage devoted to being a loving mother and wife as she and "Bob" raised six children. In 1973, she returned to school and became an L.P.N. as part of Lafayette School of Practical Nursing's inaugural class. Upon graduation, she worked at the convalescent centers in both West Point and Saluda before joining the staff of Dr. William Hosfield in West Point. She was a member of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, where she previously taught Sunday school, processed collections, and volunteered with the Good Neighbor Center. She was especially pleased to have been involved in the creation of the Veteran's Memorial at West Point Cemetery, for which she and Bob donated the land. Over the years, her interests included painting, photography, sailing, playing bridge, and reading. Kathleen was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, as well as her eldest son, James. She will be dearly missed by family and friends, including three daughters: Jane Stevens and husband, Ronnie, of Memphis, Tenn.; Liza Getman of West Point; and Mary Bishop and husband, John, of Greenville, N.C.; two sons: Louis Getman and wife, Kim, of Mitchell, Ind., and Daniel Getman of King and Queen; seven grandchildren: Katie Stevens Hill and her husband, David; Seth Stevens and his wife, Jennifer; Ruth Stevens, Jimmy and Ruth Bishop, Michael Getman, and Sarah Getman; and four great grandchildren; her brother, James Smyder (Esther Milledge), of West Winfield, N.Y., also survives. Following cremation, a funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, November 23, at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church 3570 King William Ave., West Point, VA 23181. The family will receive friends for a time of food and fellowship following the mass service also at the church. Vincent Funeral Home, West Point is in charge of arrangements. To Jane and your entire family, I am so sorry for your loss. May God comfort you during this difficult time.
I was going through West Point today. Rode down your street and wondered if any of you still lived there. What a coincidence. ❤
