Lawrence S. MCDOWELL Obituary
POQUOSON - Lawrence S. McDowell, age 66, was called to his eternal home on March 18, 2012, in his home.
Larry was a native of Newport News, Va., and a resident of Poquoson for 30 years. He was a beloved husband, father, son, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He, and his unique sense of humor, will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his father, William McDowell; his stepfather, Jack Kimberlain; his stepson, J.D. Moody; and his much loved pets, Terry, Clyde and Bonnie.
He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Patricia McDowell; his son, James McDowell of Ashland, Ky.; his stepdaughters, Trish Huheey (Phil) of Alexandria, Va., and Carol Daly (Joe) of Herndon, Va.; his stepson, Daryl Moody (Collette) of Hampton, Va.; his stepdaughter-in-law, Carol Moody of Yorktown, Va.; 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; his mother, Imogene Kimberlain of Ashland, Ky.; his sisters, Sharon Conroy (Bill) of Clayton, N.C., Linda Salmon (Bob) and Brenda Salyers of Russell, Ky., and Sandy Adams (Greg) of Flatwoods, Ky.; his constant companions, Kate, Bailey, and Fred; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends in both Virginia and Kentucky.
He retired from the Newport News Shipbuilding Fitters Department. Since retirement, he had been actively involved in many service and charitable organizations, including Warwick Lodge 336, A.F. & A.M., where he was serving as Senior Deacon; Poquoson Lodge 49, A.F. & A.M.; Scottish Rite, Valley of Newport News; Warwick Royal Arch Chapter No. 80; Warwick Chapter 43, Order of Eastern Star where he was a Past Patron and Worthy Patron-elect; and Warwick Moose Lodge 1711. He was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Poquoson, where he volunteered as Blood Drive Coordinator, a Life Member of the Poquoson Volunteer Fire Department, and honored with a commission to the Order of the Kentucky Colonels.
An O.E.S service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, at Peninsula Funeral Home, Newport News, with visitation immediately following until 8:30 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted at Trinity United Methodist Church, with the Rev. C, Eugene Meek officiating, at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, followed by interment, with Masonic Rites, in Parklawn Memorial Park in Hampton, Va.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 1294 Poquoson Ave., Poquoson, VA 23662.
