POQUOSON - Leland Gayle Mitchell, 81, passed away on Saturday, May 26, 2012.
He was born on Aug. 13, 1930, in Freeport, Ill. Leland spent 31 years in the United States Navy. Following graduation from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., in 1952, his military career included academic achievements and graduation from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, specializing in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, and additional business degrees from the College of William And Mary and George Washington University. His naval career took him to numerous locations around the world, serving on destroyers, cruisers, submarines, sub-tenders, ship repair facilities, and the Naval Ship Systems Command in Washington, D.C. He retired as a Captain in 1983.
Leland was a resident of Poquoson from 1970-1974, returning in 1981, where he has lived since. Though retired, he still enjoyed traveling the country and world. One of his most recent accomplishments was visiting all 50 Capitols of the United States with his wife, Marjorie. Those who knew him would tell you that he was a wonderful host, very generous, was very family oriented, and always ready for a good debate.
Leland was preceded in death by his sister, Arlene P. Rogers, of Warren, Ill.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marjorie Mitchell; a son, Gary C. Mitchell, of Frederick, Md.; daughters, Eileen Mitchell Godwin, of Fredericksburg, Va., and Lynne Mitchell Bunting and husband, Brent, of Hampton, Va.; grandchildren include Lauren N. Mitchell, of Los Angeles, Calif., Paige V. Godwin, of Fredericksburg, Va., Erin G. Bunting and Daniel T. Bunting, both of Hampton. He is also survived by his brother, Malcolm P. Mitchell and wife, Annette, of Fridley, Minn.; a sister, Miriam P. Mick, of Milwaukee, Wis.; and nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, at the home. A reception celebrating Leland's life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to The Mariners' Museum, 100 Museum Dr., Newport News, VA 23606. Online condolences to www.claytorrollins.com.
