NEWPORT NEWS - Mrs. Leona D. Russell, 87, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013. She was born and raised in Chowan County, N.C. She came to the peninsula in 1943 to work for C & P Telephone Co. She was an active member of Temple Baptist Church for more than 60 years. Leona was preceded in death by her husband, L. W. Russell; daughter, Linda R. Burch; brothers, James T. Dail, and R. K. Dail. She is survived by two daughters, Deborah R. Hogge and husband Gene, and Pamela R. Carmean; four sisters, Neola Adams, Carolyn Skinner, Betty Phillips and husband Harvey, and Peggy White; five grandchildren, Shella Cherry and husband Dwayne, Zachary Hogge, Brandon Carmean, Ryan Hogge, and Dawn McCarty and husband Jason; and two great-grandchildren, Maddox and Mila Cherry. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Jan. 8 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9 at Temple Baptist Church, with Rev. Dr. Mark White officiating, with a burial to follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. The family will be at the home of her daughter, Pam Carmean at other times.
