Lonnie F. HACKNEY Jr. Obituary
POQUOSON - Lonnie Freeman Hackney Jr., 86, of Poquoson, died peacefully, Aug. 9, 2011, at Sentara Careplex.
Mr. Hackney was born Sept. 21, 1924, in Charleston, S.C., to Lonnie Sr. and Angela Hackney. He graduated from Hampton High School and Watchmakers School in Kansas City, Mo. He retired in 1991 from the Naval Weapons Station, after more than 20 years of service. He built two homes, the first in Fox Hill, then in 1976 one in Poquoson, where he raised his family. He enjoyed bike riding, bluegrass music, building model boats and sitting in his hand-built swing, looking out at the water at the back of his property.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Barbara; son, Russell of Chicago; brother, Charles Hackney of Cocoa Beach; and the many extended members of the Hackney and Stant families.
Mr. Hackney served in the United States Army Air Corps, during World War II, with many months of service in North Africa. His wit, candor and knowledge on many subjects will be greatly missed.
The family would like to thank Dr. Mohammed and the staff at Sentara, and the many friends, neighbors and family members that gave great care and comfort during this difficult time.
A service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at Phoebus United Methodist Church, 300 E. Mellen St., in Hampton.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to the church in his name.
Arrangements are by Berceuse Funeral and Cremation Traditions, 2609 Cunningham Dr., in Hampton, 757-825-8070. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.
