Madelynne W. Baals Obituary
NEWPORT NEWS - Madelynne W. Baals, a resident of Warwick Forest, passed away Oct. 2, 2013. She will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Madelynne was born Sept. 18, 1922, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. She was the daughter of Ila Withers and her husband, Jim. She grew up in Detroit and later moved to Suffolk, Va. There, she met the love of her life, Donald Baals, whom she married on June 26, 1943. They first lived in Hampton when Don began working at NASA and moved in 1952 to Newport News, where they resided together until his death. Madelynne was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Newport News for more than 60 years. She served faithfully in a women's circle at her church, was active with friends in Warwick-on-the-James Homemaker's Club, delivered Meals on Wheels, and was a member of PEO for over 50 years. To all, but most especially to her family, she was an outstanding example of a devoted wife and mother. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Don, who was her best friend for more than 70 years. She is survived by a son, Robert Baals and wife, Lani, of Yorktown, and three daughters, Karen Stiff and husband, Walter, of Corolla, N.C.; Patricia Rudd and husband, Robb, of Richmond, Va., and Donna Gurley of Tulsa, Okla. Other survivors include five granddaughters, Kelli Badary, Hannah Brage, Marie and Jacqueline Wheeler, and Virginia Rudd; and two grandsons, David and Jesse Gurley. The family extends its appreciation to the staff at Warwick Forest and the employees of Visiting Angels for their loving and devoted care during the past four years. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Peninsula Fine Arts, 101 Museum Dr. Newport News, VA 23606. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at 3 p.m. in Burton Hall at Warwick Forest.
