NEWPORT NEWS - Margaret N. Long, 81, beloved wife of Edryn K. Long, died on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2007.
Salutatorian of Roanoke's Jefferson Senior High School Class of 1943, Margaret went on to graduate from Averett College in Danville and took a secretarial position at V.P.I. (Virginia Tech) where she met Edryn Long, an engineering student. They were married in Blacksburg on June 29, 1946, and recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.
A native of Roanoke, Margaret left her beloved mountains and since 1948 resided in Newport News, devoting herself to being a wife, a homemaker and mother to three daughters.
A longtime member of Grace United Methodist Church, she had been active in the music ministry as accompanist for the children's choir and a member of the bell choir. She enjoyed her friendships in the Mary Martha Circle and served her church faithfully through the years. Margaret was also a member of the Women's Club of Newport News and enjoyed singing in the Women's Club Chorus.
Margaret will be remembered for her love and devotion to family and friends, her appreciation of music, and her gentle, giving spirit.
She is survived by her husband, Edryn K. Long; her daughters and sons-in-law, Page and Lamar Williams of Newport News, Revs. Sara and David Manner of Herndon, and Susan and Wayne Brendle of Yorktown; three grandsons, Ryan Williams and wife, Emily, Daniel Manner, and Joel Manner; a granddaughter, Dana Williams; a step-granddaughter, Lisa Fant and husband, Gene; and twin step-great-grandchildren, Ethan and Emily Fant.
The family wishes to thank her in-home caregivers, Olanda Mullins, Paula Posey, and Cassandra Gay, as well as the staff of the Newport Nursing Home.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, at the Weymouth Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, at Grace United Methodist Church followed by burial at Peninsula Memorial Park.
