Mary Gaynelle H. "Gaye" Topping Obituary
POQUOSON - Mary Gaynelle "Gaye" H. Topping, 79, passed away on November 15, 2017 at home with her family by her side after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on October 3, 1938, in Newport News to Jerome Wallace & Clarke Hogge. Gaye graduated from Newport News High School and was a lifelong Peninsula resident. Gaye was a wonderful homemaker for her four boys, and later a wonderful "Mama", or "Mawmaw" to her 12 grandchildren. Her professional experience included serving as secretary for her husband's law practice. She was an avid volunteer to numerous organizations in the Hampton Roads area and enjoyed her membership in the Huntington Garden Club where she held several officer positions, and she honed her talent in flower arranging. Gaye's love for gardening started at an early age and was evident at her home on Cedar Road where she was often seen "playing in her mud pies." She was a member of the D.A.R. and was passionate about community service, educating children, and honoring and supporting those who serve our nation. She was also a long-time member of the Junior League of Hampton Roads and one of the early committee members who helped sustain the "Nature Museum" now known as the Virginia Living Museum. Gaye was a gourmet cook, and her life of service for others manifested itself in a "meal ministry" for her friends, family and neighbors during their times of need. She was an avid bridge player, loved to read, loved the outdoors and teaching her children and grandchildren about nature. Gaye had a large circle of loyal friends many of whom were lifelong pals. To know Gaye was to love her fun spirit, warm laughter, kind heart and her willingness to always put others' needs before her own. She could take the ordinary and make it special and extraordinary. Gaye was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Larry M. Topping, Esq.; and brother, Jerome W. Hogge Jr. She is survived by her four sons, Larry Jr. and wife Diane of Newport News, Parker of Poquoson, Wallace and wife Kim of Chesapeake, and William and wife JoLyn of Chesterfield; sister Bonnie Mizelle and husband Ralph of Virginia Beach and their two children and three grandchildren; sister-in-law Martha Anne Hogge and her two children and two grandchildren; twelve grandchildren, Hannah, Katherine, William, Trevor, Kendal Lyn, Trent, Samantha, Amanda, Davis, Parker, Grace and Mary Kathryn; and a host of friends and neighbors who were like family. Visitation will be held on Friday evening, November 17th, 6-8:00 PM at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home in Poquoson. A memorial service honoring Gaye will be held on Saturday, November 18, 11:00 AM, at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, Newport News, officiated by The Rev'd Scott Baker. Burial will be private at Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News. Gaye's family wishes to thank the Virginia Cancer Institute for the care and compassion shown to her during her illness. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the , 11835 Canon Blvd, Suite A102, Newport News, Va. 23606. Online condolences to claytorrollins.com .
