Robert West Obituary
POQUOSON - Robert "Bobby Ray" West, 77, a native & lifelong resident of Poquoson, passed away Saturday, March 9, 2013 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, and a former member of the Virginia Working Watermen. Although in his younger days he tried his hand at other jobs that took him away from the river, such as Newport News Shipbuilding and Yorktown Refinery's decoking unit, he heeded his call to return to his beloved salt water which many say "ran through his veins". He was very proud of his clam boat, the "Arlene W.". Bobby Ray spent many mornings at Owens Marina, drinking coffee and solving the world's problems with his friends. You never had to wonder where he stood on an issue - he had an opinion and he was going to give it to you. He enjoyed scouring the flea markets for deals, sometimes haggling for a better price. He also enjoyed woodworking and fixing up old lawn mowers. Bobby Ray loved the water, his family, and spending time with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and especially the love of his life, Arlene, who took such good care of him in his declining years. Bobby Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Hammie T. & Mary V. West, and brother, Hammie Eugene West. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Arlene; two sons, Michael Ray "Skip" West & wife, Debby, and Robert Craig West & wife, Angela; a daughter, Karen Rollins & husband, Brent; a brother, James "Mickey" West; a sister, Mary W. Edwards & husband, Lee; four grandchildren, Patrick, Casey, Amy, and Makala; four great-grandchildren, Emily, Shaun, Spencer, and Tylor; and two step-great-grandchildren, Starr and Skye. In keeping with Bobby Ray's final wishes, there will be a graveside service on Tuesday, 11:00 AM, at Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton, by Rev. Milford C. Rollins. Memorial contributions may be made to the Poquoson Volunteer Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 2099, Poquoson, VA, 23662. Online condolences to www.claytorrollins.com . Claytor Rollins Funeral Home, Poquoson, is in charge of arrangements. The family would like to thank the staff of Heartland Hospice for their loving care.
