Susan Anna Bauz Obituary
NEWPORT NEWS - Susan, 68, peacefully passed away on November 2, 2014 in the beauty of rural Connecticut. Only six months had passed since her diagnosis of bladder cancer. Susan was born on December 19, 1945 in Miami, Fla. and grew up in Newport News. After living in Washington, D.C., Mexico, and France, she returned to Newport News in 1979 and built a rich and diverse life that included a varied career spanning movement and art therapy with elderly adults and adults with intellectual disabilities, serving homeless families, and various retail positions where she met many longtime friends. She was a committed volunteer with the American Theater in Phoebus. Susan enjoyed drum circles and often joined Earth Rising gatherings. Her family feels grateful that she died knowing she was loved. She is survived by daughter Oona Waxenfelter and her husband Tim of Washington, D.C.; daughter Sasha Zatyrka and her husband Mark of West Suffield, Conn.; cherished grandchildren Zane, Elliana, and Colby; sister Carol Hawkins and her husband Slim of Newport News; brother Paul Bauz and his wife Sharon of Richmond; and 7 nieces and nephews and their families, including Liz Barrows of Newport News. She was preceded in death by parents Wally and Louise Bauz and sister Marie Holtgreve and her husband Paul of Indianapolis, IN. A memorial service will be held November 9 at the UU Fellowship of the Peninsula in Newport News. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m., with a celebration of her life at 3 p.m., followed by a procession to Lions Bridge in Mariners Museum Park to scatter Susan's ashes at sunset. Memorials may be made to Believe Big (believebig.org) or Lions Bridge (marinersmuseum.org/park-and-trail).
