Sylvia Hiett Alston Obituary
1944 – 2018 Sylvia Hiett Alston, 74, was called home unexpectedly on August 5, 2018. She was born on March 2, 1944 to the late Joe and Fannie Hiett of Keeling, VA. After military service, her father moved the family to Newport News, VA. There, she graduated from Carver High School in 1961. Sylvia was raised in the church and attended New Mine Creek (Keeling) and New Grafton Baptist Church (Newport News) before settling at Bethel AME Church. She remained a faithful and very active member of Bethel AME until God called her home. Sylvia's greatest loves were her Christian faith, love for the Lord, and caring for her family and friends. She is survived by her children: Arnetha, Georgette and Kym Alston of Newport News, VA; her brothers: Ivan (Terri) Hiett of Martinsville, VA, George (Angela) Hiett of Mt. Airy, NC, and Chris (Lauretta) Hiett of Washington, DC; and sister Alice (Ray) Gilliard. She is also survived by her loving grandchildren whom meant the world to her: Ivan Alston of Lorton, VA, Joezette and Sharise Chapman of Newport News, VA, Cassie and Kymesha Alston of Hampton, VA, Marvin Chapman of Flint, MI, Jasmine (Nkosi) Brooks of Washington, DC and Brittany Alston of Richmond, VA. She also leaves to cherish her blessed memories her 19 great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other loving relatives; and many caring friends. Family will receive friends at Ronald C. Perkins Funeral Home, 251 W. Queen Street, Hampton, VA on Friday, August 10 from 12 noon to 6:00pm. A homegoing celebration will be held at Bethel AME Church on Saturday, August 11 at 11:00am. Burial service will take place in Keeling, VA on Monday, August 13 at 1:00pm.
